BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—Rounding out an exciting weekend of basketball action, Sarah Lawrence College men's basketball finished as runner-up at the 2014 SLC Basketball Tournament at Noyes Court at Campbell Sports Center. The Gryphons defeated SUNY-ESF, 66-65, on Friday before falling to SUNYIT, 105-69, in the championship game.
After the event, rookies
Stevan Radosavljevic (Lazarevac, Serbia/Grammar School Lazarevac) and
Graham Gilleran (San Francisco, Calif./Archbishop Riordan) were named to the All-Tournament team. Radosavljevic scored 34 points with 23 rebounds in two games, while Gilleran scored 26 and posted tournament highs of 26 rebounds and five blocks. SUNYIT's Ryan James was named Tournament MVP, averaging 22.5 points per game.
On Friday, Sarah Lawrence (5-7) squared off against SUNY-ESF (4-8) in the teams' opening round game. The teams played back-and-forth basketball for the first four minutes, yielding a 6-6 deadlock. Over the next seven minutes Radosavljevic scored eight points and rookie
Mat Gerak (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) added a layup, while the Gryphons held the Mighty Oaks scoreless to take a 16-6 advantage.
SUNY-ESF responded by going on a 17-0 frenzy that kept SLC off the scoreboard for nearly five minutes. The silence was broken by Gerak with four minutes to go in the half. Captain
Josh Niebloom (Livingston, N.J./Golda Och Academy) sank back-to-back three's and
Wyatt Rocheleau (San Jose, Calif./Christopher) added five points to round out a 15-0 Gryphon rally—the game's third straight double-digit scoring run—and put SLC in front 31-25.
After SLC held a 33-26 edge at halftime, a three-point basket by
Brendan O'Connell (Andover, Mass./Phillips Academy Andover) kickstarted a 10-2 push to earn the Green and White their largest lead at 43-30. While SLC kept the lead for most of the period, the Might Oaks whittled away the gap, and ESF took its first lead of the half, 62-61, with 2:30 to go in the game.
Eight of the game's final 10 points were scored at the free-throw line, as the game became a physical duel down the stretch. In the end, a converted free throw by O'Connell made the difference, as SLC escaped with the victory.
Radosavljevic posted 25 points to set an SLC modern-era scoring record. He also collected 15 rebounds for his eighth double-double of the season. Gilleran led all players with a season-high 17 boards and also recorded six points, four blocks, four assists and three steals.
Niebloom reached double figures with 11 points, sinking three baskets from beyond the arc. Rocheleau totaled six points with six assists.
