Women's Cross Country Takes 4th at Skyline Championship

Race Results

NEWBURGH, N.Y.
—In team's Skyline debut, Sarah Lawrence College women's cross country placed fourth at the 2014 Skyline Women's Cross Country Championship, hosted by Mount Saint Mary College at Hudson Valley Sportsdome on Sunday.

For the sixth time this season, SLC was led by Natalie Grieco (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Fenwick), who captured Skyline All-Conference Second Team accolades with her 11th-place finish on the day. The sophomore won in a head-to-head sprint and crossed the line in 22:16 on the 5K course.

Rookie Katherine Shepard (Visalia, Calif./Mount Whitney) reached the finish as the Gryphons No. 2 runner, taking 19th place overall. With her time of 23:00, she took 17 seconds off her previous time on the course and completed her third-straight race as one of SLC's top two runners.

Just two spots back, senior Elizabeth Emery (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) finished her final championship race in 23:09, a mere eight seconds off her season best.

Rookie Tiffany Meier (Goleta, Calif./Olive Grove Charter) posted a career best 24:40—32 seconds faster than her previous record—to capture 38th place on the day. Classmate Georgia Cohen (New York, N.Y./UNC School of the Arts) rounded out the Gryphons' scoring runners in 50th place with a mark of 26:11. Cohen's run clinched a fourth-place team score of 130 points, well ahead of fifth-place Yeshiva.

First year Nawshin Abanti (Dhaka, India/International School Dhaka) also broke her personal record by more than 30 seconds. She stopped the clock in 26:22 for 54th place. Sophomore Melissa Molina (Union, N.J./Union) posted a season best of 27:44, good for 60th place overall.

Rookie Marisa Acosta (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy) took 54 seconds off her previous time on the course, finishing with a season-best 27:52. Fellow first year Danielle Dyen-Shapiro (Estero, Fla./Cypress Lake) was the final Gryphon to finish, taking more than two minutes off her personal best in 32:19.

St. Joseph's College Long Island won the event for the fifth straight season and for the eighth time in nine seasons. SJC captured the top two spots and four of the top five. Seven Golden Eagles placed among the top 12.

Sarah Lawrence's fourth-place finish far surpasses the team's predicted eighth-place finish in the league's coaches' poll. Purchase College experienced the most significant decline, falling from fourth place in the poll to ninth at the championship.

Sarah Lawrence cross country concludes the season at the NJIT Nick Russo Halloween Classic on Sunday, Nov. 2.
