BRONX, N.Y.—Racing in the team's first dual race since the varsity program was reintroduced in 2009, Sarah Lawrence College women's cross country edged out Maritime College (N.Y.), 27-28, at Van Courtlandt Park on Thursday.
Rookie
Katherine Shepard (Visalia, Calif./Mount Whitney) led the Gryphons to the win as the second runner across the line. Marking the second time this season that she placed as SLC's top runner, she finished the 5K course in 23:42, just 18 seconds behind the leader.
Senior
Elizabeth Emery (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) solidified her place as the Gryphons' No. 2 harrier, crossing the line in fourth place with a mark of 24:43.
Sophomore
Natalie Grieco (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Fenwick) came across the line in sixth place at 26:54, a mere 10 seconds behind her closest opponent.
SLC made up critical points when rookie
Georgia Cohen (New York, N.Y./UNC School of the Arts) crossed the line seventh with a personal collegiate best of 27:06, easily surpassing a nine-minute-mile pace.
First year
Nawshin Abanti (Dhaka, India/International School Dhaka) clinched the Gryphons' triumph by taking eighth place in 30:18, rounding out the Gryphons' score for the one-point victory.
Sarah Lawrence returns to action on Sunday at the Second Annual City College of New York Cross Country Collegiate Classic on the 8K course at Van Courtlandt.
