Men's Basketball Opens Season at Wesleyan

Box Score MIDDLETOWN, Conn.—Twelve different Gryphons scored points in the team's season opener, as Sarah Lawrence College men's basketball was defeated by Wesleyan University, 100-51, in the opening game of the Herb Kenny Tip-Off Tournament at Silloway Gym on Saturday.

Sarah Lawrence (0-1) debuted eight new players in the game, while six returning Gryphons put their names on the first stat sheet of the 2014-15 season. In all, the rookies accounted for more than 60 percent of SLC's scoring, while Wesleyan (1-0) capitalized on stellar shooting to pull away with the win.

The first half saw the Gryphons hold the lead for a moment, as an early three-pointer by sophomore Graham Gilleran (San Francisco, Calif./Archbishop Riordan) put SLC up 3-2 for half a minute. Wesleyan pulled away for good with an 8-0 run and shot an incredible 8-for-10 from beyond the arc to build an insurmountable 59-22 halftime lead.

SLC regained its footing in the second half but was still outscored 41-29 in the period, putting a tally in the loss column to start the season's long campaign. The Gryphons will have a chance to rebound on Sunday when they take the court against Becker College in the tournament's consolation game.

With the Gryphons' distributed offense, no SLC players reached the double-digit threshold. Rookie Malin Segal (Marblehead, Mass./Concord Academy) led the team with nine points and also collected team-highs with six rebounds and three assists.

Gilleran and sophomore transfer Ege Ozcan (Istanbul, Turkey/Andrews Osborne Acad. (Ohio)) added seven points and two steals apiece, while sophomore Stevan Radosavljevic (Lazarevac, Serbia/Grammar School Lazarevac) scored six points. SLC's career blocks leader Gilleran notched one swat in the season opener.

SLC concludes its weekend with a showdown against Becker College in the consolation game of the Herb Kenny Tip-Off Tournament on Sunday. The game is slated for 1 p.m.
