Men's Swimming Splits Duals on Senior Day

Meet Results

BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—
Sarah Lawrence College men's swimming concluded the fall semester by splitting its double-dual meet at the Campbell Sports Center on Saturday. The Gryphons fell to Skyline opponent Purchase College, 102-73, but defeated non-conference rival Bard College, 86-52.

During the meet, three graduating Gryphons were honored as part of SLC's senior day ceremony. Owen Marks (Pittsfield, Mass./Pittsfield), Jay Pulitano (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes), and Michael Turadek (Bronx, N.Y./HS for Environmental Studies) were recognized for their dedication and accomplishments with SLC swimming.

Both meets saw four lead changes with the teams squaring off in back-and-forth action. Bard (2-5) came out on top in the 200 medley relay, while Sarah Lawrence (2-4, 1-3 Skyline) placed second. Pulitano, sophomore Jack Chu (Hong Kong/Irvington (Calif.)), junior Cameron Martinez (Aledo, Texas/Aledo) and rookie Brendan McAlevy (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI Catholic) posted a runner-up time of 1:56.42.

After Purchase (4-6, 3-2 Skyline) won the 500 freestyle, Martinez extended the Green and White lead over the Raptors with a victory in the 200 freestyle (1:50.74). With points from Marks' fourth-place swim, the Gryphons took their first lead in the scoring against Bard.

Bard retook its lead and Purchase closed the gap as the visitors collectively swept the top three spots in the 50 free. McAlevy swam a season best for fourth place and Turadek placed fifth, helping the Gryphons to hold on to their edge over the Panthers.

Purchase took its first advantage over SLC following a one-two finish in the 200 individual medley. Meanwhile, Sarah Lawrence regained the lead for good over Bard, thanks to a third-place swim by Pulitano and a fourth-place showing by sophomore Nick Ransom (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale).

Martinez earned a win in his final race of the day, winning the 100 butterfly with a time of 53.70 seconds, nearly 10 seconds faster than his closest opponent.

The Gryphons got their lead back over Purchase when Chu touched the wall first in the 100 freestyle. He finished one second off his season best in 50.47 seconds, 5.76 seconds faster than the rest of the field.

Purchase bounced back with a second and fourth-place swim in the 100 backstroke. McAlevy placed third in the race, while Turadek took fifth in his first attempt at the race this season. PC secured its victory with a sweep of the 500 freestyle.

Chu placed second in the 100 breaststroke, edging his closest opponent by 0.4 second. Ransom collected fifth-place points with a season-best time, while Pulitano also swam a season best and beat out two Raptors for seventh place.

In the day's final race, Turadek, Marks, Ransom and rookie Amit Sankaran (San Francisco, Calif./Mallya Aditi International) placed second in the 200 freestyle relay with a combined time of 1:57.39.

Sarah Lawrence returns to action with its home finale against College of Staten Island on Saturday, Jan. 17.
