Men's Volleyball Bitten by Purchase

BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—Sarah Lawrence College men's volleyball was defeated by Purchase College, 3-0, in a non-conference match at Noyes Court at Campbell Sports Center on Wednesday.

Sarah Lawrence (0-6) won the opening point of the match, but a 10-0 run gave Purchase (2-2) a 13-3 advantage. Though SLC stranded together two small runs, the Panthers closed out the 25-10 set.

The second set played much the same way, with PC jumping out to a 16-6 start. Purchase's Kevin Carges served up four-straight aces to earn a 25-10 win for the Panthers.

The final set saw the Gryphons capitalize on 15 Purchase errors, but the visitors put away nine kills and four aces to take the 25-18 final set.

Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week Ishaan Pujari (Bangalore, India/Inventure Academy) was held to just four kills on the day. Sophomore Derek Komar (Stormville, N.Y./John Jay) notched two kills, while libero Justin Heftel (Spokane, Wash./Saint George's School) landed one kills.

On defense, the Gryphons totaled eight digs, led by setter Brent Terry (Crownpoint, N.M./Idyllwild Arts Academy) and Heftel with two apiece. Terry finished with five assists.

For Purchase, Kevon Kareem Bruce landed 13 kills while picking up four digs. Setter Andrew Schwab totaled 13 assists, while Carges and Riley Damerell had eight service aces each.

The Gryphons return to action Sunday when they host Fontbonne University and Pratt Institute in a tri-match. Action begins at 1 p.m.
