BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—Though the Gryphons were able to take an early lead in their latter match, Sarah Lawrence College men's volleyball was defeated by York College (N.Y.), 3-0, and by Cooper Union, 3-1, in a non-conference doubleheader at Noyes Court at Campbell Sports Center on Saturday.
Sarah Lawrence (0-16) fell behind early against York (12-4), as the Cardinals jumped out to a 16-4 lead to start the match and scored nine unanswered points to end the 25-7 first set. York again broke open an insurmountable lead to win the second set 25-10, and the Cardinals clinched the sweep, 25-11.
Sophomore Gryphon
Cameron Martinez (Aledo, Texas/Aledo) led the Green and White with five kills in the match, while junior
Ishaan Pujari (Bangalore, India/Inventure Academy) landed three kills in the match. Rookie
Amit Sankaran (San Francisco, Calif./Mallya Aditi International) led the defense with a season-high four digs.
For York, Leszek Stankiewicz led the match with eight kills followed by Randy Adams with seven. Setter Jaquan DeJesus assisted 16 spikes, while Adams and Bryan Williams led all players with five digs.
In the opening set of the Gryphons' second match, SLC went on a 5-0 run to open up a 10-6 lead over Cooper Union. The Hawks stayed within three points at 19-16, but SLC won six of the last eight points in the 25-18 set, the first set that Sarah Lawrence has won this season.
The second set saw SLC score five straight points to take a 16-12 lead, but Cooper erased the deficit at 17-17. From there, the teams dueled back-and-forth to a 24-24 draw. The Gryphons survived a set point after trailing 25-24, and took a 26-25 edge. In the end, however, Cooper Union scored the three points in a row to close out the 28-26 second set and level the match at one set apiece.
SLC led early in the third set until Cooper Union scored six points to earn a 10-5 lead. The Gryphons never closed the gap, and the visitors picked up the third set, 25-20. CU's Justin Poserio served up nine straight points in the fourth set, spelling doom for the Gryphons. The Hawks went on to score the last eight points of a 25-12 set, clinching the 3-1 win.
Pujari set an SLC program record with 21 kills in the match, adding 10 digs for his second double-double of the season. Senior setter
Brent Terry (Crownpoint, N.M./Idyllwild Arts Academy) set a season-high with 30 assists, complementing his six digs in the match.
Martinez added eight kills and six service aces for the Gryphons, while the team racked up a season-best six blocks. Sankaran and senior
Luc Mitchell (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) each added three kills in the match.
For Cooper Union, Matthew Lee earned a double-double after leading the attack with 11 kills and the defense with 13 digs. Steven Leone pitched in nine kills and nine digs. Setter Jonathan Ostrander posted 27 assists. Lee and Poserio each posted five service aces.
Sarah Lawrence men's volleyball continues its homestand on Thursday when the Gryphons host Southern Vermont College at 6 p.m.
