NEW YORK—The Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC) has named 23 Sarah Lawrence College student-athletes to its 2014 Winter-Spring All-Academic Team, as announced by the league on Tuesday. For the second academic year in a row, SLC led the 12-school league with the most honorees, earning a total of 49 HVIAC selections in the fall and spring combined.
Among the nearly two dozen winter/spring Gryphons recognized, five received all-conference honors and eight are repeat All-Academic honorees.
The SLC honorees were highlighted by women's swimmer
Alexis Bates (Morristown, N.J., Morristown) and men's tennis player
Elliott Warkus (Waimea, Hawai'i, Parker School). Both student-athletes are repeat All-Academic selections who were tabbed all-conference in 2014. Bates is a seven-time Hudson Valley Invitational champion and team-record holder in the 1000 and 1650 freestyle as well as three relays. Warkus, who also competes on the SLC men's soccer and men's swimming teams, was honored as a 2014 Alice Stone Ilchman Scholar-Athlete for his contributions on and off the field.
The All-Academic Teams consist of student-athletes who have reached sophomore academic standing and have earned a 3.5 cumulative grade point average or better at the conclusion of the spring semester. Honorees must also participate in one of the conferences' winter and spring sports—basketball, softball, women's swimming, men's tennis and men's volleyball.
