Men's Soccer Scores 3 in Culinary Loss

Box Score
YONKERS, N.Y.—Though the Gryphons scored three goals in their season opener, Sarah Lawrence College men's soccer fell to Culinary Institute of America, 5-3, in a non-conference game on Sunday.

Culinary (1-1) broke open a four-goal lead in the first half and looked to cruise to victory.

In the 40th minute, Sarah Lawrence (0-1) got on the scoreboard with the first career goal by Finn MacMillan (London, U.K./Bryanston). Taking advantage of a crossing pass from Alix Legrand (Damascus, Pa./Scranton Prep), MacMillan put the ball away into the bottom left corner for SLC's first score of the season.

Two and a half minutes later, MacMillan fed the ball to rookie Varun Kelkar (Nagpur, India/Jenks), who put a shot into the top right corner of the net to cut the deficit to 4-2 at halftime.

Early in the second half, Culinary's Michael Grueter scored his second goal of the game to give the visitors a 5-2 edge.

SLC rounded out the scoring in the 76th minute, when Kelkar pocketed his second goal of the game. The first-year forward put his shot inside the right post to advance the score to 5-3; MacMillan assisted on the play.

In goal for the Gryphons, sophomore Nikos Efstratudakis (London, Ontario/American Community School of Athens) notched six saves while yielding two of the Steels' goals. CIA's Jonathan Bedell also totaled a half-dozen saves.

SLC's three-goal total is the same as the Gryphons' combined scoring total from the five previous meetings with Culinary.

Sarah Lawrence hosts Medgar Evers College on Friday at Randall's Island Park at 7:30 p.m.
