Box Score BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—Sophomore
Stevan Radosavljevic (Lazarevac, Serbia/Grammar School Lazarevac) tied the game with less than three seconds remaining, but a last-second shot proved decisive, as Sarah Lawrence College men's basketball was edged out by Maritime College, 65-62, in a Skyline Conference game at Noyes Court at Campbell Sports Center on Saturday.
Sarah Lawrence (1-11, 0-8 Skyline) recovered from a 15-point deficit in the first half and took an eight-point lead, 57-49, with six minutes to play. Maritime (5-8, 3-3 Skyline) bounced back and used a pair of free throws to take a 62-60 advantage with 23 seconds to play. On SLC's final possession, Radosavljevic gathered an offensive rebound and put back a layup that tied the game with 2.3 ticks left on the clock. On the ensuing play, Maritime worked the ball up the court, and time expired while John Liccese's successful three-pointer was in flight, giving the visitors the win.
In the first half, SLC's cold shooting saw the Gryphons fall behind 12-0 after four minutes of play. Transfer sophomore
Ege Ozcan (Istanbul, Turkey/Andrews Osborne Acad. (Ohio)) played a critical role in getting the Green and White offense on track. After entering the game in the ninth minute, Ozcan converted five field goals in as many minutes to account for 11 of the team's first 15 points.
Maritime's early success put the Privateers on top, 30-15. A pair of three-pointers by sophomore
Wyatt Rocheleau (San Jose, Calif./Christopher) helped to chip at the deficit, and SLC trailed 35-26 at the break.
Early in the second half, rookie
Keith Burns (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) pocketed back-to-back treys to help the Gryphons keep the game close. Sophomore
Brendan O'Connell (Andover, Mass./Phillips Academy Andover) also converted from beyond the arc, setting off a 15-3 rally for the Green and White to give Sarah Lawrence its first lead, 49-46.
Back-to-back layups by sophomore transfer
Jeff Jordan II (Smithfield, Va., Smithfield) put SLC at its largest advantage at 57-49. From there, Maritime scored 10 straight to regain the lead at 60-57 with two minutes to play.
Both teams missed critical free throws in the final minute, setting up Radosavljevic's game-tying score.
The three-point margin of defeat is SLC's smallest since a 56-53 loss to Albany Pharmacy in February 2014. For Maritime, the win snapped a three-game skid and brought the Privateers back up to .500 in conference play.
Ozcan led Sarah Lawrence with 15 points, one shy of his season best. Burns finished with a season-high 11 points off the bench, matching the team's season best of 3 three-pointers in a game.
Burns led the team with eight rebounds and four assists, while Radosavljevic collected seven boards.
Sarah Lawrence has the week off and returns to its home court on Saturday, Jan. 24, at 1 p.m. against College of Mount Saint Vincent.
