Box Score YONKERS, N.Y.—A last-minute goal proved critical, as Sarah Lawrence College men's soccer was defeated by Cooper Union, 1-0, in a non-conference game at Tibbetts Brook Park on Saturday. The goal provided vengance to the Hawks, after SLC defeated CU, 1-0, with a walk-off overtime goal in 2014.
IN SHORTCooper Union def. Sarah Lawrence (1-8-3), 1-0.
THE RIVALRYIn a series that began in 2009, Sarah Lawrence picked up its first win over Cooper Union last season. Then-senior
Ishaan Pujari (Bangalore, India/Inventure Academy) scored three minutes into overtime to secure the win for the Gryphons.
FIRST HALFCooper Union controlled the tempo early, recording the first eight shots of the game. Rookies
Mohamed Camara (Macenta, Guinea/New World) and
Colin Berg (Franklin, Mass./Mount Saint Charles Academy) anchored the Gryphon offense, as Camara contributed three shots in the first half, while Berg added two. Senior defender
Juan Sucre (Caracas, Venezuela/ASFM (Monterrey, Mexico)) also had two shots in the first half. The Gryphons nearly broke the shutout in the final minute, but Camara's long strike hit the crossbar, and the teams were empty handed at the intermission.
AFTER THE BREAKCooper Union built momentum in the second half, building a 13-5 advantage in shots taken. Berg recorded his third shot of the game, and sophomore
Varun Kelkar (Nagpur, India/Jenks) also got in on the offensive effort. Camara put two more shots on target and finished the game with a team-high five.
THE FINAL MINUTECooper Union put two shots on target in the 89th minute, but after a pair of saves by SLC keeper
James Berry (New York, N.Y./Kent), the possibility of overtime seemed inevitable. In the final minute, CU served up a corner kick and put it in a scrum in front of the net. The Sarah Lawrence defense attempted a clear, but the effort found the foot of Michail Luczkiw, who put the ball in the Gryphons' net with 33.3 seconds in regulation.
SLC attempted to respond, and in a last-ditch effort, junior
Roland Wynter (New York, N.Y./Lower Manhattan Arts Academy)s fired a beautiful shot that looked for an instant that it would equalize the game. At the last moment, CU keeper August Hunt deflected the shot out of bounds, and the horn sounded before the ensuing corner kick could be made.
UP NEXTSarah Lawrence plays its final road game of 2015 when the team travels to Sage on Wednesday. The Gryphons round out the season with home games against York (Oct. 24) and Farmingdale State (Oct. 28).
