Box Score BROOKLYN, N.Y.—Three rookies were among the seven Gryphons to take the court, as Sarah Lawrence College men's volleyball made its 2015 debut against St. Joseph's College Brooklyn in a non-conference match at The Hill Center on Wednesday. Though SLC took a 14-7 lead in the first set, St. Joseph's picked up the 3-0 sweep of the match.
Sarah Lawrence (0-1) won 10 of the first 15 points in the match to take an early lead and force St. Joseph's (3-2) to call a timeout and regroup. The Gryphons won the next two points out of the break, capitalizing on a total of seven SJC errors to take a 12-5 advantage.
With Sarah Lawrence in front, 14-7, the Bears finally came to life and went on a 15-0 run before closing out the set, 25-15. The went on to win the second set, 25-9, and the third, 25-12.
For the Gryphons, first year
Isaac Gamboa (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale) anchored the Gryphon defense with a match-high 12 digs, adding a kill and an assist. Junior
Alex Carroll (Boston, Mass./Homeschooled) led the team with three kills and three service aces, while rookie setter
Richie Warke (Vancouver, Canada/Rockridge Secondary) landed a pair of kills while assisting four others and recording three digs.
Senior
Derek Komar (Stormville, N.Y./John Jay) had three digs, a kill and an assist in the first match of his final season. Sophomore
Jacob Zhu (Shanghai, China/Shanghai Jianping) recorded two service aces, a dig and a kill, and classmate
Justin Heftel (Spokane, Wash./Saint George's School) got on the stat sheet with a two digs, a kill and an assist. Junior
Zach Hasl (Somers, N.Y./Soundview Preparatory) rounded out the lineup in his collegiate debut.
Sarah Lawrence plays its first-ever Skyline matches on Sunday when the Gryphons travel to New Jersey City University for a tri-match including Purchase College. The Green and White play their home opener a week later on March 1.
