Box Score NEWARK, N.J.—Gryphons history was made as Sarah Lawrence College men's basketball squared off against New Jersey Institute of Technology in SLC's first-ever contest against a NCAA Division I opponent. Despite taking an early seven-point lead and scoring 13 three-point field goals, Sarah Lawrence (1-24) was eventually overcome, 90-55, at Fleisher Athletic Center on Saturday.
Following an NJIT (17-11) basket on the opening possession, sophomore captain
Graham Gilleran (San Francisco, Calif./Archbishop Riordan) scored the Gryphons' first points, tying the game at 2-2.
SLC got its first lead after a three pointer by rookie
Logan Dubek (Tempe, Ariz./Corona del Sol) put the Gryphons up, 5-2. Following a Highlander basket, sophomore
Wyatt Rocheleau (San Jose, Calif./Christopher) hit from beyond the arc to increase the lead to 8-4.
At the other end of the floor, SLC forced the third NJIT turnover of the first four minutes. Dubek then connected for three points on his next shot attempt to put the Gryphons in front, 11-4 at the first media timeout.
NJIT erased the Gryphon advantage and took a one-point edge with an 8-0 run. Sophomore Gryphon
Ege Ozcan (Istanbul, Turkey/Andrews Osborne Acad. (Ohio)) then tied the game, 12-12, with a successful free throw.
Dubek connected on his third three-pointer to put SLC back in front, 15-12 before the Highlanders scored nine unanswered points.
Sophomore
Brendan O'Connell (Andover, Mass./Phillips Academy Andover) broke NJIT's momentum with a successful three-point try, making it a 21-18 game. Following an NJIT three-pointer, SLC's Dubek scored his fourth three-pointer of the game, tying the most by any Gryphon this season. Gilleran added a bucket to narrow the gap to one, 24-23.
From there, NJIT pulled away by scoring 16 consecutive points to end the half, 40-23. At the intermission, Dubek's 4-for-4 three-point shooting gave him a game-high 12 points.
In the second half, rookie
Glenn Forstner (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck South) broke a five-minute scoring drought with a three-point basket. Fellow first year
Christian Moraros (Brooklyn, N.Y./ELEV|8 Academy) also got in the scorebook with a field goal. Later in the period, Gilleran scored five consecutive points on back-to-back field goals.
With seven minutes to play, Ozcan drained a three-pointer, the team's ninth of the game—matching the team's most in a game this season.
Down the stretch, Forstner and rookie
Keith Burns (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) scored three-pointers, and Ozcan scored two more treys. The gun-slinging Gryphons scored a stunning total of 13 three-point field goals, their most since 2011 and second-most in program history.
Gilleran—who has taken over the program's lead in scoring, free throws and assists—finished with a team-high 14 points, followed by Dubek's 12. Ozcan reached double-figures with 11 points. Dubek led the team with six rebounds and a career-best three assists, while Gilleran followed with four rebounds.
