Box Score BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—The Gryphons put up a formidable challenge by taking the contest to five sets, yet Sarah Lawrence College men's volleyball was edged by Medgar Evers College, 3-2, in a non-conference match at Noyes Court at Campbell Sports Center on Tuesday.
After Medgar Evers (1-16) won the first set, 25-13, Sarah Lawrence (0-9) retaliated by sprinting out to a 12-3 advantage in the second set. Sophomore
Amit Sankaran (San Francisco, Calif./Mallya Aditi International) landed back-to-back kills to start the set, two of his three on the day. Junior
Cameron Martinez (Aledo, Texas/Aledo) notched a pair of service aces to help the Gryphons build their edge and finished with three aces total.
With the Gryphons leading 14-5, Medgar Evers crawled back to narrow the gap to one point at 19-18. SLC refocused and won seven of the last eight points in the 25-19 win, helped by three service aces from junior
Alex Carroll (Boston, Mass./Homeschooled) to end the set.
MEC scored eight straight points in the third set to regain the overall advantage, two sets to one.
In the fourth set, the Green and White took a 5-1 lead and held the margin through 12-8. A 7-1 SLC run gave the Gryphons a 20-11 advantage, and though the Cougars attempted to rally, Sarah Lawrence clinched the set, 25-18.
The decisive set saw the Cougars regain momentum and steal a 9-2 lead in a race to 15. In the end, the deficit was too much to overcome, and the visitors clinched the match, 15-5.
Setter
Richie Warke (Vancouver, Canada/Rockridge Secondary) finished the day with a career-best and team-high five kills along with 13 assists, six assists and three blocks.
Martinez also posted a team-best five kills and anchored the defense with 17 digs, the team's highest total this season. Carroll had five kills as well and contributed three assists with a career-best four blocks.
Sankaran posted a team-best five service aces and career-best four blocks. Senior
Derek Komar (Stormville, N.Y./John Jay) chipped in two kills and eight digs, while sophomore
Isaac Gamboa (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale) had five digs, two blocks, a kill and an ace.
Sarah Lawrence is back in action on Thursday with a Skyline match at Ramapo College. The Gryphons and Roadrunners square off in their first-ever meeting at 8 p.m.
