IN SHORTSarah Lawrence (1-2-1, 0-1-1 Skyline) ties Mount Saint Vincent (3-2-1, 0-0-1 Skyline), 2-2 [2ot].
THE FIRST 45 In the opening period, the Dolphins held the Gryphons to no shots and a single corner kick. At the other end of the field, the barrage of shots began with Mount Saint Vincent accruing 13 shots in the half. CMSV had trouble keeping the shots on target, putting only five on goal, all saved by SLC keeper
James Berry (New York, N.Y./Kent).
GRYPHONS STRIKE FIRSTComing out of the intermission tied 0-0, Gryphon
Finn MacMillan (London, U.K./Bryanston) fed a crossing breakaway pass from the right side and found
Alix Legrand (Damascus, Pa./Scranton Prep) on the other side of the back line. Facing a one-on-one with the Dolphin keeper, Legrand calmly slotted the ball inside the right post, giving the Gryphons a 1-0 edge.
CMSV TAKES CONTROLThe visitors were energized by the deficit and began a flurry of five shots in the next five minutes. In the 59th minute, Diego Hernandez leveled the game at 1-1 with a successful shot from the left post. Mount Saint Vincent proceed to rack up 20 shots in the period, including a successful penalty kick in the 66th minute.
THE EQUALIZERThe Gryphons struggled to take control of the game, combatting their opponents as well as the clock. At the onset of the final minute of regulation, Sarah Lawrence had Mount Saint Vincent pinned deep in its defensive end. A Dolphin defender's clearing kick went awry, and from 10 yards out, Legrand put the ball in the back of the net to tie the game at 2-2 with 55.1 seconds remaining.
OVERTIMEBoth teams stepped up the agressive play, but the Gryphons' defensive efforts prevailed. CMSV tallied 13 shots in the 20 minutes of overtime. The Sarah Lawrence back line held firm, and with six saves from Berry, SLC walked away with the draw.
BETTER THAN A LOSSWhile a win would have been better, Sarah Lawrence's draw has a major upside. The feat marks the first point that SLC posts in the Skyline standings, and it came against a team that qualified for the Skyline postseason in 2014.
BRICK WALLBerry finished the game with 23 saves, the most-ever for a Gryphon by a wide margin. The previous SLC record was 14 saves by Elliott Warkus at Bard College on Oct. 20, 2011.
FOR THE RECORDIn 2014, Mount Saint Vincent defeated the Gryphons 10-1, marking SLC's biggest loss of the season.
DEFENSIVE ENDURANCEIn addition to Legrand, MacMillan and Berry, seven other Gryphons played a full 110 minutes. Those players included captain
Juan Sucre (Caracas, Venezuela/ASFM (Monterrey, Mexico)),
Colin Berg (Franklin, Mass./Mount Saint Charles Academy),
Mohamed Camara (Macenta, Guinea/New World),
Sean Garrett (Reston, Va./Flint Hill School), Tobias Geisler-Mesevage,
Tahmid Munat (Dhaka, Bangladesh/Notre Dame) and
Kerem SmithStone (New York, N.Y./East Side).
