Parker Hagmaier (Oakland, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd) led the game with five rebounds while Old Westbury doubled up the Gryphons, 32-16, at halftime.
The tide turned in the second half as the Gryphons slashed the deficit with a 10-2 run to open the period. Old Westbury halted the attack and the two teams played even for much of the second half with the advantage hovering between eight and 12 points. OW went up by 14 points, 69-55, with two and a half minutes to play and seemed destined to cruise to the win. Five quick points by sophomore
Malin Segal (Wenham, Mass./Concord Academy) and a three-pointer by rookie
Gabe Eng (Brooklyn, N.Y./The Beacon School), brought the game within reach, 69-63, with a minute to play.
Another trey by Eng advanced the score to 71-66 with the Gryphons down by only five points and 48 ticks left on the clock. In the end, solid free-throw shooting by the Panthers sealed the visitors' win, 75-66.
FOR THE GRYPHONSThree SLC players scored in double-digits in the second half, led by 19 points by Gilleran. Adding a first-half field goal, the junior captain finished with 20-plus points for the second time this season and fourth time in his career. Eng totaled 11 points in the second half, bolstered by a trio of three pointers. Segal scored 11 points in the second period, totaling 13.
Under the boards, Hagmaier led all players with 10 rebounds, contributing six points and four assists on offense. Rookie guard
Austin Jones (Upper Marlboro, Md./Flint Hill School) shared a game-high six assists, and junior guard
Wyatt Rocheleau (San Jose, Calif./Christopher) dished out five assists.
FOR THE PANTHERSP.J. Page shot 8 for 13 from the floor to lead his team with 19 points. Jamail Stanley scored 17 and Cody Zafran followed with 12 points. Page had team-highs of six rebounds and three steals, and Stephon Odle had six assists.
UP NEXTSLC hits the road for a pair of Skyline games to round out the week. The Gryphons travel to Mount Saint Mary College on Thursday before taking on Skyline newcomer St. Joseph's College Brooklyn on Saturday.
