Men's Basketball Confronts St. Joseph's Brooklyn

Box Score BROOKLYN, N.Y.—Despite outscoring its opponent, 51-42, in the first half, Sarah Lawrence College men's basketball was eventually dismissed by St. Joseph's College Brooklyn, 89-80, at The Hill Center on Saturday.

IN SHORT
St. Joseph's Brooklyn (7-6, 5-5 Skyline) def. Sarah Lawrence (2-11, 0-9 Skyline), 89-80.

FIRST HALF
Both teams had a strong opening to the first period and were on pace for a high-scoring affair. At the midpoint of the half, St. Joseph's was in front by a 30-24 margin. Following a three-pointer by rookie Gabe Eng (Brooklyn, N.Y./The Beacon School), SJC regained a six-point edge, 33-27. Junior Mat Gerak (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) scored the next four points of the game, starting off a 10-0 run for the Gryphons. Classmate Stevan Radosavljevic (Lazarevac, Serbia/Grammar School Lazarevac) pitched in with two of his 12 points in the half before another trey by Eng handed the Gryphons a 37-33 advantage.

Sophomore Malin Segal (Wenham, Mass./Concord Academy) and captain Graham Gilleran (San Francisco, Calif./Archbishop Riordan) joined Eng and Gerak in scoring 14 of the next 18 points in the game, helping SLC amass a 14-point lead, 51-37. St. Joseph's chipped away at the deficit, but the Green and White carried a nine-point lead into halftime, 51-42.

Gilleran led all players with 15 points in the half, while Radosavljevic trailed just behind at 12 points. Eng reached double figures with 11 points, and Gerak added nine.

SECOND HALF
Sarah Lawrence maintained its advantage for five minutes of the second half before the Bears finally re-gained the lead, 56-55. Back-to-back field goals by Radosavljevic and a Gilleran layup put SLC back on top, 61-56. The Bears scored the next nine points to spark a 17-2 tirade that neutralized the Gryphons, 73-63, with seven minutes to play. SLC closed the gap to seven points at 75-68 with four and a half minutes to play, but St. Joseph's regained a double-digit advantage. With under a minute to go, a three-point play by Gerak made it an 86-80 ballgame, yet the rally fell short as St. Joseph's iced the game with three successful free throws along with missed field goals on SLC's final two possessions.

FOR THE GRYPHONS
Gerak's 14 second-half points gave him a career-high 23 points to lead the Gryphons. Gilleran rounded out the game with 17 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for his first double-double of the season and the fifth of his career. Radosavljevic totaled 16 points with nine rebounds, and rookie Parker Hagmaier (Oakland, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd) scored nine points in the second half while collecting nine rebounds in the game. Eng finished with eight rebounds to go with his 11 first-half points.

FOR THE BEARS
Matt O'Neill scored 29 points in the second half, including 8-for-16 shooting from the floor and 11 points from the charity stripe; he finished with 36 points and eight rebounds. Jamir Archer had a double-double on 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Sean Salomons scored 11 points.

FORWARD PROGRESS
Despite the loss, the Gryphons' 80 points are the team's most scored against a Skyline opponent. SLC's 14-point lead and nine-point halftime advantage were both the largest margins that the team has achieved in a Skyline game.
