IN SHORT
Sarah Lawrence (4-7) def. Medgar Evers (2-11), 3-2.
KEY MOMENTS
Medgar Evers controlled momentum early, but Sarah Lawrence was the first to hit the scoreboard. In the 36th minute, sophomore
Colin Berg (Franklin, Mass./Mount Saint Charles Academy) drove the field with teammate
Finn Macmillan (London, U.K./Bryanston), capitalizing on a two-on-two breakaway that started at midfield. In the final yards, Berg passed to Macmillan, who netted the game's first goal and the only score prior to halftime.
Medgar Evers scored an equalizer in the first 10 minutes of the second half, and in the 64th minute, the Cougars took a 2-1 edge following a long assist off a direct kick in the backfield.
Less than five minutes after MEC went in front, the Gryphons struck back. Junior
Varun Kelkar (Nagpur, India/Jenks) sent a long pass from the right side of midfield and found Macmillan within the penalty box. The junior quickly scored his second goal of the game and fourth of his season, tying the contest at 2-2.
With tension mounting and aggression flaring, the decisive score came with less than 15 minutes to play. Rookie
Owen Smith (Kingston, Jamaica/Bronx Ctr for Science and Math) deflected a loose ball in a scramble in front of the goal. The ball found its way to the feet of defender
Tobias Geisler Mesevage (Ghent, N.Y./Hawthorne Valley Waldorf School), who struck hard for his first collegiate goal and the eventual game-winner. By game's end, the Cougars out-shot the Gryphons, 17-13, but Sarah Lawrence escaped with the narrow victory.
The win gives the team its most victories since the 2011 season, and the Gryphons have their most home victories in program history.
