MATCH FLOWIn set one, Sarah Lawrence took a 6-3 advantage and led by three at 9-6. The Maccabees kept the score close, and the two teams fought through seven ties to an 11-11 deadlock. Yeshiva strung together eight straight points to go in front, and the home team closed out the first set, 25-15. Junior
Isaac Gamboa (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale) landed two kills in the set, and rookie
Callan Moor (Los Angeles, Calif./New Roads) scored SLC's third kill of the set.
In the second set, an early kill by Moor helped the Gryphons tie the score at 5-5. YU scored the next four points, and SLC was forced to use a timeout, trailing 13-8. Out of the break, YU went on a 7-1 run to stretch the lead to 20-9. The Gryphons scored seven of the last 12 points of the set, but the rally ran out of room in the 25-16 loss. Zach Hasl (Somers, N.Y./Soundview Preparatory) split SLC's first block of the match, and sophomore
Richard Warke (Vancouver, Canada/Rockridge Secondary) served up the team's first ace of the match. Senior
Alex Carroll (Boston, Mass./Homeschooled) also had a kill late in the set.
Rookie
Darcy Thompson (Highland Park, N.J./Highland Park) landed a kill to tie the third set at 3-3. Moor had an early kill and Hasl served up an ace as the teams exchanged points through six ties to knot the set at 9-9. A service ace by Warke helped the Gryphons take a two-point edge at 11-9. After the Gryphons fell behind, 16-13, Gamoba and Hasl shared a block as part of a 5-0 run that put SLC on top, 18-16. From there, YU scored the next two points to tie the match at 18-18, and six points later, the Maccabees were sitting on match point, 24-18. SLC scored once more but couldn't halt YU's efforts.
