BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—The Gryphons squeaked out first-set win but were unable to hold on to the advantage, as Sarah Lawrence College men's volleyball was defeated by Medgar Evers College, 3-1, in non-conference action at Campbell Sports Center on Friday.

FIRST SETIn the opening set, SLC and MEC were locked in early ties at 2-2 and 5-5. The Cougars opened up a five-point lead at 13-8 and remained in control. Rookie Gryphon
Callan Moor (Los Angeles, Calif./New Roads) landed back-to-back kills, and junior
Isaac Gamboa (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale) followed with a service ace, narrowing the deficit to 15-14. Medgar Evers rebounded to go up 19-14, and progressed the edge to 22-19. From there, a 5-0 Gryphon run proved decisive, and SLC escaped with the 25-23 win. The five-point comeback is the program's second-largest in its five-season varsity history.
Moor finished the set with seven kills. Gamboa had two kills to go with his ace. Senior
Alex Carroll (Boston, Mass./Homeschooled) had an ace and a kill, while sophomore
Richard Warke (Vancouver, Canada/Rockridge Secondary) also had a kill.
MEDGAR EVERS RALLIESMedgar Evers quickly regained momentum by winning the first six points of the next set, winning the second frame, 25-15. The Cougars also won the first three points in each of the third and fourth stanzas, leading wire-to-wire in the final three sets.
FOR THE GRYPHONSMoore finished the day with a season-high 11 kills and a service ace. Gamboa totaled seven points on six kills and an ace. Carroll had five kills to go with two aces, senior
Zach Hasl (Somers, N.Y./Soundview Preparatory) added a kill, and rookie
Darcy Thompson (Highland Park, N.J./Highland Park) also had a kill.
Warke finished with 17 assists, while Moor assisted two kills. Libero
Gavin Spilker (Weston, Ohio/Otsego) led the team with 10 digs, earning an assist as well. Moor and Warke also helped the defense with nine digs each, Carroll contributed six digs, and Gamboa had five.
UP NEXTOn Tuesday, Sarah Lawrence will take on Wittenberg University on the court of Yeshiva University at 7:30 p.m. The Tigers are in their first year as a varsity program and knocked off No. 15 Juniata College earlier this season.
