FAIRFAX, Va.—Three Sarah Lawrence College student-athletes have been named to the 2016 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars Teams, as named in the April 21, 2016 edition of
Diverse: Issues In Higher Education magazine. All three Gryphons were named Second Team Scholars in their respective sports.
Diverse: Issues In Higher Education sponsors the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Awards to honor undergraduate students who have excelled in the classroom as well as on the athletic field. Inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe Jr.'s commitment to education as well as his love for the game of tennis, U.S. colleges and universities are invited to participate in this annual awards program by nominating their outstanding sports scholars. In addition to their athletic ability and academic performance, Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars demonstrate a commitment to community service and student leadership.
SOFTBALL
Kamaron McNair (Lawrenceville, N.J./The Hun School)
In the 2015 season, McNair started in all 32 games, 26 times as pitcher. From the plate, she set an SLC record with 30 runs batted in, hitting .400 and racking up the team's second-most hits. In the circle, she pitched 142.2 innings with 76 strikeouts. On March 16, she set an SLC record by striking out nine batters against Southern Vermont College, and on May 3, she hit her first career home run against The College of New Rochelle. McNair was named to the 2015 Skyline All-Sportsmanship softball team. On campus, she serves as a Resident Advisor (RA) and as Vice Chairperson of Student Senate. For the third year in a row, McNair spent half of her winter break on a service mission to Haiti, where she helped build an orphanage and spent time helping in the medical clinic.
MEN'S SOCCER
Tahmid Munat (Dhaka, Bangladesh/Notre Dame)
For his career, Munat has played in 43 games, making 22 starts. He has scored three goals and assisted two others for eight career points. He has totaled 25 career shots and nearly 2,500 career minutes played. Munat is a two-time Skyline Academic Honor Roll selection. In the community, Munat was elected to represent the undergraduate body on the SLC campus Student Activities Subcommittee, which meets weekly to discuss campus operations and voice concerns of the student body.
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
Monet Thibou (Brooklyn, N.Y./Elisabeth Irwin)
In her three years on the volleyball team, Thibou has played in 75 of the team's 80 matches since 2013, starting 50 times. She has career totals of 82 kills, 17 aces, 62 digs and eight blocks. In 2015, she recorded new personal bests with 51 kills and 54 digs with 13 aces and five blocks. Thibou is a 2015 Skyline Academic Honor Roll selection. On campus, she is enrolled in a four-part theatre program and serves as a Resident Advisor (RA). Thibou is helped to found and captain the SLC Dance Team, which performs at home basketball games.
