Men's Soccer Defeats Culinary, 1-0

Box Score YONKERS, N.Y.—Rookie Owen Smith (Kingston, Jamaica/Bronx Ctr for Science and Math) scored the game's only goal to lead Sarah Lawrence College men's soccer to a 1-0 victory over Culinary Institute of America at Tibbetts Brook Park on Sunday.

IN SHORT
Sarah Lawrence (2-2) def. Culinary Institute (0-3), 1-0.

KEY MOMENTS
By the midpoint of the opening half, the Steels had amassed a 5-1 advantage in shots, but the Gryphons kept up the aggression on the Culinary defensive end. In the 27th minute, Smith pressured the CIA back line and capitalized on a defensive miscue. The rookie Gryphon intercepted the ball from the back line and circumvented the Steels' keeper to score the eventual game-winning goal.

GRYPHON LEADERS
Sarah Lawrence eventually outshot Culinary, 12-11, including five shots by sophomore defender Colin Berg (Franklin, Mass./Mount Saint Charles Academy). Senior Roland Wynter (New York, N.Y./Lower Manhattan Arts Academy) and sophomore Niall Ridgley (Santa Fe, N.M./Santa Fe Preparatory) each recorded a pair of shots in the game, while defenders Tobias Geisler Mesevage (Ghent, N.Y./Hawthorne Valley Waldorf School), Andrew DeNatale (Rochester, N.Y./The Harley School) and Kerem SmithStone (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia/East Side (N.Y.)) also contributed to the shutout. In goal, keeper Mehran Hicks (Hartsdale, N.Y./The Masters School) made six saves on the day.

IN THE RECORD BOOK
Sunday's win is the Gryphons' first over the Steels. Including the teams' first recorded meeting in 1989, Sarah Lawrence is 1-7-1 all-time against CIA. With Saturday's win over York (N.Y.), the Gryphons recorded their first back-to-back victories since 2013.
