BRONXVILLE, N.Y.—The Gryphons led at halftime but were outscored in the second half, as The Sage Colleges defeated Sarah Lawrence College men's basketball, 80-68, in Skyline action at Noyes Court at Campbell Sports Center on Thursday.
IN SHORT
Sage (9-7, 5-2 Skyline) def. Sarah Lawrence (5-10, 1-5 Skyline), 80-68.
KEY MOMENTS
Sarah Lawrence charged out of the gate to take an early lead. Senior co-captain
Graham Gilleran (San Francisco, Calif./Archbishop Riordan) converted on a trio of three-point baskets in the first three minutes of the game, propelling the Gryphons to an 11-6 lead. Sophomore
Parker Hagmaier (Oakland, Calif./Bishop O'Dowd) added a three-point field goal to extend the advantage to 14-6. Sage fired back and tied the game at 21-21 within the first eight minutes of the contest.
Sage took its largest lead of the first period, 31-27, in the 12th minute of the game. Senior
Mat Gerak (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) scored the next basket, and rookie
Dillon Collins (Southbury, Conn./Holy Cross) scored back-to-back jumpers to help SLC to a 33-31 edge. At halftime, the Gryphons held a narrow 42-41 advantage.
In the second half, the lead changed hands several times early in the period, and sophomore
Austin Jones (Upper Marlboro, Md./Flint Hill School) gave Sarah Lawrence a lead, 50-46. From there, Sage went on an 8-0 run to erase the Gryphons' lead for good. The final tie of the game came at 52-52 following a Hagmaier layup with just under 11 minutes remaining.
With just over four minutes to play, reigning Skyline Rookie of the Week
Joseph Kleeman (Greenwood Village, Colo./Arapahoe) drained a three-pointer to make it a one-possession game, 69-66. Unfortunately for the Gryphons, that would mark the team's final points until rookie
BJ Sanders (Silver Spring, Md./Georgetown Prep) scored a layup on SLC's final possession in the final minute.
Sarah Lawrence scored over 40 first-half points for the first time in 2017, but the effort wasn't enough to stop the streaking Gators, who have won seven of their last nine games.
