Men’s Basketball Surges in Second Half to Defeat Pratt

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence men's basketball team used a strong second half to cruise past Pratt, 90-72, in the team's season-opener at Activities Resource Center.

TOP GRYPHON PERFORMANCES
Four players finished in double-figures in the victory. First year Andrew Varoli scored a team-high 16 points in his collegiate debut, highlighted by four three-point field goals. Classmate Omar Jamaleddine had a strong outing in his first college game, recording 15 points, eight rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Enike Anyia had a solid showing in the opener, posting a double-double of 13 points and a team-best 11 rebounds.  Austin Jones notched 15 points, all in the second half, along with three steals, two assists and a pair of blocks. 

BJ Sanders finished with seven points, four rebounds and one steal, while Gabriel Eng and Justin Bailey contributed five points each.

RECAP
Pratt was hot offensively in the opening half, shooting 52-percent from the field. The Cannoneers used 12 points from Griffen Levine and 11 from Eric Jean to hold a 38-37 lead at half.

The Cannoneers opened the second period with a basket, but a triple from Isaiah Pean (19:21) knotted the contest at 40. Sarah Lawrence took its first lead of the afternoon with back-to-back buckets from Jones (44-40). The senior co-captain had a strong second stanza, attacking the basket and pushing the Gryphons' lead to double-digits at the 11:13 mark, causing a turnover and completing a three-point play (62-41).

Sarah Lawrence continued to pull away, leading by as much as 20 points (3:34). The Gryphons shot over 50%, and was terrific from the free throw line, converting 11 of 12 attempts. Sarah Lawrence picked up its intensity on defense, holding Pratt to 35% shooting.

The Gryphons took advantage of 11 second half turnovers from Pratt, scoring 15 points. Sarah Lawrence used its size advantage, outscoring the Cannoneers 46-18 in the paint.

Sarah Lawrence is now 7-0 against Pratt under head coach Chris Ehmer. The victory also snaps an 18-game road losing streak that dates back to the 2016-17 campaign.
