Men’s Basketball Falls to CMSV in OT, 86-84

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - Jason Barrera hit the game-winning basket in overtime to help Mount Saint Vincent defeat Sarah Lawrence, 86-84, in a Skyline matchup at Campbell Sports Center.

TOP GRYPHON PERFORMERS
Omar Jamaleddine notched his first collegiate double-double, scoring a game-high 23 points while grabbing 10 rebounds. The rookie also recorded four assists and one steal.

Enike Anyia recorded his forth consecutive double-double, finishing with 22 points, 12 rebounds and two assists. Andrew Varoli posted 12 points, hitting four 3-pointers, while BJ Sanders contributed 11 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Austin Jones finished with eight points, six rebounds, six assists and three steals in the loss.

Mount Saint Vincent, picked sixth in the Skyline Preseason Poll, raced out to a 13-4 advantage with 13:58 left to play in the first half. Sarah Lawrence countered with nine straight points, powered by six made free throws and a 3-pointer from Jamaleddine, tying the contest 13-13 with 9:07 on the clock.

The two teams continued to trade baskets throughout the stanza, as a triple from Jamaleddine in the final minute sent Sarah Lawrence into the break with a 32-28 lead.

The Gryphons opened up a 45-37 margin in the second half with 15:17 left to play, but a 17-1 spurt from Mount Saint Vincent over 3:03 gave them a 54-46 lead.

Later in the stanza, trailing 63-55, Sarah Lawrence scored eight unanswered points, thanks to a pair of 3-pointers from Varoli and another bucket from Jamaleddine to knot the game with 6:54 left in regulation.

With 2:09 on the clock, Anyia hit a pair of free throws to put the Gryphons up, 72-71. Sarah Lawrence extended its lead with a layup from Sanders for a 74-71 edge with 1:02 left to play. 

Mount Saint Vincent hit a pair of free throws to get within a point with 53 seconds left, but Jones hit a free throw with 14 seconds remaining to give the Gryphons a 75-73 edge. Mount Saint Vincent forced overtime in the final seconds, following a basket from Raiquis Harris.

In overtime, the Dolphins scored the first field goal of the period, but back-to-back baskets from Sarah Lawrence gave them a 79-77 lead with 2:35 to play.

The Dolphins hit a 3-pointer to regain the lead, but a basket from Anyia pushed Sarah Lawrence back in front. Mount Saint Vincent hit a jumper to take the lead, but a 3-pointer from Varoli put the Gryphons ahead, 84-82, with 1:12 remaining. The Dolphins tied the game 84-84 with 51 seconds left following a basket from Barrera.

Mount Saint Vincent forced a turnover with 22 seconds left, calling a timeout to draw up a final play. The Dolphins gave the ball to Barrera, who scored a right-handed layup for the go-ahead field goal.
