Men’s Basketball Rallies to Defeat St. Joseph’s Brooklyn, 87-75

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – The Sarah Lawrence men's basketball team improved to 4-2 in Skyline play Thursday, storming back from a second half deficit to defeat St. Joseph's Brooklyn, 87-75, at Campbell Sports Center.

TOP GRYPHON PERFORMERS
Gabriel Eng led the Gryphons with a career-high 25 points, hitting 7-of-8 attempts from beyond the arc. He also grabbed four rebounds and handed out three assists.

BJ Sanders finished with 20 points, seven rebounds, three assists and one steal, while Omar Jamaleddine notched his second straight double-double, totaling 16 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Enike Anyia posted 16 points, seven rebounds and three assists, while Austin Jones contributed a team-high seven helpers in the win.

The two squads traded baskets and runs throughout the first half of play, featuring four ties and three lead changes. Knotted at 30 with 5:29 left in the period, St. Joseph's Brooklyn, picked fifth in the Skyline Preseason Poll, scored six straight points to take the lead with 3:05 remaining in the half. The Gryphons trimmed the deficit to a field goal with 1:34 on the clock, but five unanswered points from the Bears sent them into the break with a 41-36 advantage.

St. Joseph's Brooklyn continued to make shots in the second half, opening up an 11-point cushion (63-52) with 11:59 remaining in regulation.

The Gryphons began to mount their comeback, outscoring the Bears 17-6 over 4:55 to tie the contest 69-69 with 7:04 left in the game. Sarah Lawrence benefitted from a hot shooting stroke from Eng, as the co-captain connected on all three of his 3-pointers during the run.

Sarah Lawrence, who entered the day 1-17 all-time against the Bears, took its first lead since the opening period at the 6:02 mark, thanks to layups from Anyia and Jamaleddine to give the Gryphons a 73-69 advantage. St. Joseph's Brooklyn hit a shot to shrink the margin to one possession, but Sarah Lawrence countered with a 10-2 run, capped off by a 3-pointer from Jamaleddine with time expiring on the shot clock, to open up a double digit lead (83-73) with 1:08 remaining.

The Gryphons hit their free throws down the stretch, highlighted by a perfect 4-for-4 effort from Eng, securing the victory.

Sarah Lawrence shot 60-percent from the field in the second half, including a scorching 83% from three-point range (10-12 3FG).

It was win No. 5 for Sarah Lawrence, surpassing its win total from last season. It was also the squad's fourth conference win of the year, tying the team record for league victories in a season. Three of the Gryphons' conference wins this year have come against teams picked to finish higher in the preseason poll, including Yeshiva (1st), Merchant Marine (7th) and St. Joseph's Brooklyn (5th).
