Mount Saint Mary Holds Off Women’s Volleyball in Five Sets

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – Despite rallying from a 0-2 deficit to force a fifth set, the Sarah Lawrence women's volleyball team dropped a Skyline contest to Mount Saint Mary Monday at Campbell Sports Center.

Mount Saint Mary, picked fifth in the Skyline Preseason Poll, pulled away in each of the first two sets to take a 2-0 series lead.

Sarah Lawrence, coming off a win over Maritime, began its comeback trail in the third set. Trailing 20-18, the Gryphons finished the frame on a 7-4 run, highlighted by a 5-0 spurt, to win the game, 25-22, and force an additional set.

In the fourth set, Mount Saint Mary raced out to a 15-9 advantage. Sarah Lawrence scored six unanswered points to take the lead (16-15). Later in the frame, trailing 19-17, the Gryphons regained the lead with four straight points for a 21-19 edge. The Knights countered with three consecutive points for a 22-21 advantage, but Sarah Lawrence finished the set with a 4-2 run to force a decisive fifth game.

The Knights, in need of a victory after coming to Bronxville losers of eight straight matches, controlled the final set, going on to win, 15-5.

Clarise Steiner posted a double-double in the loss, finishing with 10 kills and a match-high 30 digs. Isabel Pecora dished out 30 assists while recording 17 digs, while Lauren Kilroy chipped in with six kills and 18 digs.

Melanie Coleman contributed eight kills and 1.5 blocks, while Davis Mathis added nine kills and one ace.
