Gryphons Earn #SkylineWVB Win at St. Joseph’s Brooklyn in Straight Sets

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Sarah Lawrence first-year Davis Mathis posted her first collegiate double-double to lead the Gryphons women's volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over St. Joseph's Brooklyn Thursday at The Hill Center. It's the Gryphons' first win in Brooklyn since 2010.

TOP GRYPHON PERFORMANCES
Mathis finished with season-highs in kills (12) and digs (13), while Melanie Coleman recorded a match-high 19 points, collecting 12 kills, five aces and two blocks. Coleman also contributed a season-high nine digs.

Isabel Pecora handed out a match-best 24 assists, while Clarise Steiner (25) and Lauren Kilroy combined for 49 digs. Kilroy is closing in on becoming the first Gryphon ever to record 1,000 digs, currently standing at 988.

Gabrielle Hegedus chipped in three kills, three aces and a season-best 12 digs in the win.

Overall, Sarah Lawrence finished with 86 digs, tying a season-best, which is also the third-most in a single match in team history. The Gryphons' 86 digs recorded on Thursday was the most in a three-set match in program history.

Sarah Lawrence turned in a strong performance on the road, earning its first victory of the year away from home while snapping a seven-match losing streak. The win also ended a two-match losing skid to the Bears.

In the opening set, the two teams exchanged points for a 10-10 score. Sarah Lawrence created separated with a 9-3 spurt to open up a 19-13 lead. The Bears, picked three spots ahead of the Gryphons in the Skyline Preseason Poll, chipped away at the margin, using a 9-3 run of their own to make it a 22-21 contest. Sarah Lawrence scored the final three points of the frame to win, 25-21, and take a 1-0 series lead.

The second set was a nail bitter, as the teams traded runs throughout the set. Sarah Lawrence held a 24-22 lead but surrendered back-to-back points to knot the contest. Tied 26-26, St. Joseph's Brooklyn committed a pair of errors to secure a 28-26 victory for the Gryphons and a 2-0 series edge.

Sarah Lawrence found itself trailing 13-6 to begin the third set, but went on to outscore St. Joseph's 10-3 to tie the contest at 16-all. Following a timeout by the Bears, the Gryphons continued to ride their momentum, finishing the set on a 9-3 run to secure the sweep.

Sarah Lawrence is back on the court Saturday (Oct. 5) for a tri-match at Bard College. The Gryphons will take on the Raptors at 11 a.m., followed by Maritime at 1 p.m.
