Gryphons Drop Non-League Contest to William Paterson at Scranton Invitational

SCRANTON, Pa. – The Sarah Lawrence men's basketball team began play at the 2019 Hilton Scranton Invitational Friday with an 86-66 loss to William Paterson at the John Long Center.

TOP GRYPHON PERFORMERS
Three Gryphons finished in double-figures in the loss. Omar Jamaleddine scored a team-high 14 points, while Enike Anyia added 11 points and Justin Bailey chipped in with 10, hitting all five of his field goal attempts.

Jelani Jackson finished with six points, hitting a pair of 3-pointers, while Chris Torres added five points. Sammy Marshall, Michael Dixon and Ryan Corniel each recorded their first collegiate field goal in the loss.

William Paterson, a member of the New Jersey Athletic Conference, raced out to a 14-4 lead 7:25 into the contest.

Sarah Lawrence, coming off a season-opening victory over Pratt, settled into the game, using an 8-0 run to make it a one possession contest with 9:53 remaining in the half.

The Pioneers pushed the margin back to double-figures, outscoring the Gryphons 28-14 the rest of the stanza to take a 42-26 advantage into halftime.

William Paterson continued to roll in the second half, holding a lead as large as 30 points, going on to win the non-conference matchup in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

The Pioneers shot 43-percent from the field, including 33-percent from beyond the arc. Sarah Lawrence had a tough night on offense, shooting 39-percent, including 19-percent from 3-point range.

Turnovers plagued the Gryphons, as Sarah Lawrence committed an uncharacteristic 22 turnovers in the contest, leading to 28 William Paterson points.  

Five players scored in double-figures for the Pioneers, including Sean Smith, who led all scorers with 23. He also grabbed a team-best seven rebounds.
