Anyia Scores Program-Record 33 in #SkylineMBB Loss at Maritime

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. - Sarah Lawrence sophomore Enike Anyia scored a program-record 33 points, but it wasn't enough as the Gryphons men's basketball team suffered a 81-72 setback at Maritime at Riesenberg Gymnasium.

TOP GRYPHON PERFORMERS
Anyia reached 30 points for a third time this season, the most by a Gryphon in team history. The sophomore's 33 points broke his own record of 32 that came in a win at Farmingdale State. The two-time Skyline Player of the Week recipient made 11 of his 15 field goal attempts, his 12th game of the season shooting 60-percent or better, including his seventh of 70% or higher. He leads the Skyline in field goal percentage.    

BJ Sanders finished with 11 points and three rebounds, while Omar Jamaleddine posted nine points, 13 rebounds and four assists. The rookie's 13 rebounds is his sixth game with 10 or more boards this season.

Gabriel Eng hit a pair of 3-pointers, while Austin Jones contributed four points, seven rebounds and a pair of assists. 

RECAP
Maritime held off a late push from the Gryphons in the final minutes to clinch the season split. Sarah Lawrence won the first meeting of the year by a 70-67 score.

The two teams exchanged points in the opening minutes for a 6-6 contest with 17:10 left in the half. Sarah Lawrence created some separation with a 9-0 spurt over 2:33 to take a 15-9 advantage. Maritime countered, using an 8-2 run to knot the game 17-17 with 9:22 remaining in the period.

Anyia scored five straight points to put the Gryphons back in front, 22-17, but an 8-0 run from the Privateers put them ahead, 25-22, with 4:24 to play.

Following a timeout, Sarah Lawrence went on a 9-2 stretch to take a 31-27 lead, but a basket as time expired from Maritime made it a 31-29 contest at halftime.

Things tightened up in the second half, as the period featured seven ties and seven lead changes.

Tied 56-56 with 8:42 to play, the Privateers pulled away with a 16-5 run over 5:02 to open up a 72-61 cushion. Sarah Lawrence did not go away, shrinking the deficit to five (74-69) with 2:04 on the clock. Maritime hit a 3-pointer on the next possession and free throws down the stretch to secure the win.

Sarah Lawrence wraps up the regular season on Saturday (Feb. 16) at St. Joseph's Long Island. The Gryphons remain in contention for a first round home playoff game.  Â
