RECAP
Sarah Lawrence ends its season with a 14-12 record, its first winning campaign in team history. Picked to finish ninth in the Skyline Preseason Poll, the Gryphons exceeded expectations, finishing as the No. 5 seed and earning a postseason berth for the first time in school history.Â
It was back and forth scoring between the two squads, as a 3-pointer from Varoli put the Gryphons ahead 18-16 with 7:55 left in the half. Purchase regained the lead with a triple, going on to create separation with a 17-3 run over 7:17 to open up a 33-21 margin with 38 seconds on the clock. Anyia hit a pair of free throws before the break to send the game into halftime with a 33-23 score.
The Panthers opened up a 15-point advantage (38-23) to begin the final period. The Gryphons chipped away at the deficit, using a 14-4 spurt to get within five (42-37) with 14:42 remaining. Purchase answered with eight straight points to extend its lead (50-37) with 11:45 to play.Â
Sarah Lawrence hung around, cutting the margin to single digits on several occasions, but Purchase maintained its lead to secure the win and advance to the Skyline Championship Semifinals. The Panthers will face top-seeded Farmingdale State on Friday.Â
It was the final career appearance for Sarah Lawrence senior co-captains Eng and Austin Jones. The duo will graduate being a part of the third team ever at Sarah Lawrence to qualify for postseason play since the Gryphons moved to NCAA Division III. Â
The future looks bright for Sarah Lawrence. The Gryphons return their top three scorers next year to a squad that set team records for road wins and conference victories (12) in 2018-19, including its first-ever wins over St. Joseph's Long, Yeshiva and Farmingdale State.Â
