Men’s Basketball Drops Conference Opener to Old Westbury

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – The Sarah Lawrence men's basketball team opened Skyline play Monday with an 83-71 loss to Old Westbury at Campbell Sports Center.

TOP GRYPHON PERFORMERS
Omar Jamaleddine, the Skyline Player of the Week, posted his fifth double-double of the season, recording 20 points and 10 rebounds. The sophomore also handed out a season-high five assists.

Chris Torres had a solid outing, scoring a team-high 21 points, posting season-highs in field goals (8) and 3-pointers (5). The first-year also grabbed four rebounds while dishing out three assists.

Enike Anyia finished with 10 points, four rebounds and three assists, while BJ Sanders contributed six points, 10 rebounds and a season-best five helpers.

RECAP
It was an energetic first half, featuring a combined five ties and five lead changes. Sarah Lawrence held a brief lead in the final minute of the stanza, but a pair of charity tosses from the Panthers gave them a 44-43 edge at intermission.

Old Westbury, who entered the day 9-0 all-time against Sarah Lawrence, opened the second half with 10 straight points over 3:00 to take a 54-43 lead.

Sarah Lawrence shrunk the deficit to single digits on several occasions, getting within five (63-58) with 10:54 to play. The Gryphons did not get any closer, as the Panthers went on to outscore Sarah Lawrence, 17-6, over 8:03 to open up their largest lead of the contest (80-64), securing their first league victory of the season.
 
Old Westbury was led by its upperclassmen, as Justin Alleyne-Washington, Pedro Marquez and Charles Wingate accounted for 72 points, scoring 24 apiece.

The Panthers outscored Sarah Lawrence in the paint, 40-32, while capitalizing on miscues by the Gryphons, converting 20 turnovers into 26 points.
