DANBURY, CONN. - Three players finished in double-figures for the Sarah Lawrence College men's basketball team as the Gryphons took on the Plattsburgh State Cardinals in the consolation game of the Western Connecticut State Tip-off Tournament on Sunday afternoon. SLC fell 77-72.
NUMBERS
- Chris Torres scored 20 points, shooting 8-14 from the field. The Danbury, Conn. native hit three shots from beyond the arc and dished out three helpers.Â
- Liam Barry had 14 points and three assists. He was perfect from the free throw line, going 3-3.Â
- Justin Bailey recorded 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds.Â
- The Gryphons outrebounded the Cardinals 37-34.Â
- The bench supplied 23 points.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
SLC jumped out to an early 10-4 lead, getting buckets from Barry, Torres, and
Xiyuan Zhang. With nearly 14 minutes left in the half, Torres knocked down a three, giving the Gryphons a 15-6 advantage. Sarah Lawrence did not surrender the lead for the remainder of the half, going up by as much as 14 on two different occasions. Plattsburgh brought the contest to within six by the end of the half. The Gryphons shot 65.4 percent from the field through the first 20 minutes.Â
Sarah Lawrence opened the second half on a 9-5 run, building a 10-point edge with the first three-pointer of the season from
Justin Bailey at the 15:01 mark. Plattsburgh kept chipping away, cutting the deficit to two points with a little over 11 minutes remaining. From there, the teams were neck-and-neck. Sarah Lawrence gave up the lead for the first time since the 18:05 mark of the first half with one minute and 26 seconds remaining in the second half.
Andrew Varoli hit a three pointer with eight seconds left, bringing the Gryphons to within three points. Two free throws on the next Plattsburgh possession cemented the final score.Â
