ANNADALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence College women's volleyball team won its first match of the year, defeating Albertus Magnus 3-1 on Saturday afternoon. The Gryphons competed in a tri-match hosted by Bard College. SLC fell to the host Raptors 3-2 before facing off against the Falcons, splitting the day.
MATCH 1
Sarah Lawrence took the first set 25-20.
Mia Rector was responsible for two of the Gryphons' first three points, recording two service aces. SLC never trailed throughout the first set, building its lead to 19-10 at one point. The Raptors clawed their way back, cutting the deficit to one, but the Gryphons held strong, maintaining the advantage until the final point.
Claire Mitchell ended the set with a kill.
Bard won sets two and three 25-20 and 25-16, respectively. With the match on the line, the Gryphons stepped up, grabbing a 25-19 victory in the fourth set. Down 5-3, SLC strung together a 3-0 run capped off by a
Georgi Massey kill. Bard led 9-7, then the Sarah Lawrence offense exploded for a 13-3 rally that included kills from four different Gryphons. Massey put up four kills and a service ace during the run.
The final set saw eight ties, but Bard never lost its lead, winning the set 15-12 and the match.
MATCH 2
SLC won the first set again, this time earning a 25-19 triumph.
Mia Rector began the second match the same exact way as the first, tallying two service aces. The Falcons jumped out to a 9-7 lead, but the Gryphons quickly erased the deficit, retaking an 11-10 advantage. From there, it was all Sarah Lawrence. The Gryphons maintained the edge for the rest of the set.
Skyler Kawecki-Muonio had two kills.
Albertus Magnus established a 6-2 lead, but the deficit was not enough to hold the Gryphons back. SLC knotted the set at eight, then took an 11-10 edge and never looked back. Sarah
Lawrence capitalized on the Falcons' mistakes.
Claire O'Rourke had a kill and a service ace in the 25-22 win.
The Falcons won set three 25-17.
Davis Mathis has three kills.
Claire Mitchell's kill early on gave the Gryphons a 4-1 lead in the final set.
Isabel Pecora registered two kills near the midway point of the set. Albertus Magnus evened the score at 13. Tied at 14, Pecora fired off two consecutive kills, both assisted by
Mia Rector. Rector set up Kawecki-Muonio for point 18. Rector assisted on four of the Gryphons' final five points. SLC took the match 26-24.
