MBB | Gryphons Halt Late Comeback in 65-63 Win Over Mount Saint Mary

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. Amos Grey dropped a career-high 20 points on 64 percent shooting, leading the charge for the Sarah Lawrence College men's basketball team in a 65-63 win over Mount Saint Mary College on Monday night.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
  • Grey's 20 points are the most by a Gryphons' first-year player since fellow Connecticut native Chris Torres put up 22 against Stevenson on December 12, 2019.
  • Xiyuan Zhang sank four shots from beyond the arc and knocked down both of his free throws on his way to 14 points. The sophomore grabbed seven rebounds.
  • Justin Bailey finished with 11 points and 5 boards.
  • Liam Barry led the team in assists with six to go along with nine points and five rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The teams traded baskets through the first 10 minutes and 32 seconds, forcing a 12-12 tie at the 9:28 mark of the first half. Grey had seven of the team's first 12 points. From there, SLC ripped of a 14-2 run, creating some breathing room. Zhang nailed three shots from deep on three consecutive Sarah Lawrence possessions. The Gryphons rode that momentum all the way into the intermission, building a 17-point lead at the break.

MSMC did not back down, slowly chipping away at the deficit throughout the entire second half. The Knight brought the game to within 10 points nearly five minutes into the half. A 6-0 spurt, featuring two buckets from Bailey and a Liam Barry jumper, swelled the margin back to 16. Mount Saint Mary compiled a 24-9 run, spanning 11 minutes and 15 seconds, narrowing the lead to just one with a little over two minutes remaining in the contest. Zhang hit two clutch free throws at the 1:43 mark, stretching the lead back to three. The Knights responded with a bucket with a minute and 17 seconds left. Amos Grey made a tough layup on the next Gryphons' possession, beating his defender left and finishing over the 6'8 forward of the Knights.
Strong defense from SLC on the Knights' final possession of the game sealed the victory.
