Liam Barry,
Lucas Murray, and
Justin Bailey all posted double-doubles for the Sarah Lawrence College men's basketball team in the Gryphons' conference matchup with the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday afternoon. SLC narrowly fell 70-66 to the Mariners.
NUMBERS
- Barry went for a team-high 20 points, adding 10 rebounds and four assists.
- Murray recorded 16 points and 11 boards.
- Bailey led the team in rebounds, grabbing 12 to go along with 11 points.
- The Gryphons defense forced 15 turnovers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SLC went up 7-2 early in the first half, earning contributions from Barry,
Xiyuan Zhang, and Bailey. An 8-2 USMMA run put the Mariners ahead by one at the 16:50 mark. The teams were neck-and-neck for the remainder of the half, resulting in seven lead changes. A three-pointer from Merchant Marine with 14 seconds left, giving the Mariners a slight two-point edge heading into the intermission.
Though it was close for the entirety of the contest, USMMA never surrendered its lead. SLC brought eh game to within three points or fewer four different times before the halfway point, trailing by one at the 10:30 mark. The Mariners did not budge, keeping their single-digit edge until the final whistle. The Gryphons trailed by two with five seconds left in regulation, but two free-throws from USMMA iced it.
