Gryphons Show Strong Defense Against Hunter

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – Davis Mathis led the way for the Sarah Lawrence College women's volleyball team with nine kills but the Gryphons ultimately fell to Hunter College 3-0 Thursday evening at the Noyes Court at Campbell Sports Center.

SLC dropped to 10-6 overall with the straight sets loss to Hunter College improved to 10-3. The victorious Hawks cruised to a 25-12, 25-18, 25-16 victory.

The Gryphons turned in one of their worst hitting performances of the season with just 17 kills and 21 attack errors in 88 attempts for a -.045 hitting percentage.

Despite the lack of offense, SLC saw its defense do as much as it could in order to give itself a chance in the second and third sets after a bleak first set all around. The Gryphons tallied 32 digs including 12 from Kaille Ferguson and three blocks with Athena Kazos tallying two.

Mia Rector did all she could from her setter position by dishing out 12 assists, but the Hawks were just as stingy on defense as they collected 39 digs and four blocks.

The Gryphons will look to rebound from tonight's performance on Saturday, Oct. 8 when they travel to Mahwah, N.J., for a tri-match hosted by Ramapo College. SLC will take on Ramapo at 10 a.m. and Moravian (Pa.) University at noon.
