Torres leads Gryphons in Tough Overtime Contest

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - After 40 minutes of high-intensity play, Sarah Lawrence College and the Saint Elizabeth University Eagles found themselves tied with 50 points apiece. After a low-scoring overtime period, the Eagles used strong free-throw shooting to secure the victory, narrowly fending off the Gryphons. While the game was never out-of-control, both teams were playing tough defense, leading to 45 total fouls and 44 combined turnovers. This loss gives Sarah Lawrence a 1-2 overall record and they will look to bounce back to .500 against non-conference Lehman next Tuesday.

By the Numbers
  • Senior Chris Torres led the Gryphons in scoring with 12 points and added four assists
  • First-Year Eamon Kelly turned in another solid all-around performance with 11 points, six rebounds and two steals
  • Lucas Murray tied with Kelly and guard Amos Grey for the team lead in rebounds with six while adding 10 points and a block
  • Brady Burman came off the bench to score nine points, including a three-pointer late in overtime that would momentarily give the Gryphons a one-point lead

How it Happened
The game started off both teams keeping close, with the Gryphons jumping out to a slight lead roughly halfway through the period thanks to a St. Elizabeth turnover leading to a three-pointer from Burman, giving Sarah Lawrence the lead and starting a 16-10 run that would lead to the half. Torres connected on a shot from deep after receiving a pass from Grey and then the sophomore point guard helped himself, getting to the line and sinking both free throw shots to extend the Gryphon lead to four points with just over four minutes remaining. A fast-break layup for Joshua Capellan and two free-throws by Murray with four seconds remaining gave Sarah Lawrence a 34-25 lead heading into the break.

Coming out of halftime, the Gryphons seemed to be continuing their hot streak, jumping out to a 12 point lead with 16:29 remaining thanks to three made free-throws in two trips to the line for Burman. Following those points, the Eagles would mount a 21-7 scoring run, briefly taking the lead with four-and-a-half minutes left before a jump shot from Murray tied the game again and gave both the Gryphons and the Campbell Sports Center back the energy that was drained by the Saint Elizabeth scoring run. The final four minutes of the game saw each team score just four points each, and while the Gryphons would take a three-point lead with just over two minutes remaining, the Eagles would not give up, making a layup with 1:53 remaining to get within two points before tying the game on two free throws with just 16 seconds to play.

In the overtime period, the Gryphons once again drew first blood, due to a made shot from behind the arc by Torres. After trading baskets and free throws for a couple trips, the Eagles found themselves up by two points with one minute remaining. Murray would receive the ball and kick it out to Burman for the aforementioned three-pointer that would give the Gryphons a lead, albeit temporarily, and a timeout by Sarah Lawrence would allow them to set up for the incoming offensive attack by the Eagles. On the attack for St. Elizabeth, point guard Syhid Daniels found Jonathan Ramos for a three-pointer to give the Eagles a two point lead with just 24 seconds remaining, taking back all of the momentum made by the Burman triple. Unable to get a quick look, the Gryphons could not find a rebuttal and an empty possession gave the ball back to the visiting Eagles. Following a 1-for-2 showing at the line for Daniels, St. Elizabeth found themselves up by three with just three seconds remaining. The Gryphons inbounded the ball to Grey, hoping to get up a three, but the Eagles fouled him before he could get a shot up, sending him to the line for two shots with a three point deficit to overcome. After sinking the first shot, Grey attempted to get his own rebound but missed the rim on the attempt, giving the Eagles the victory by a score of 59-61.
