Kelly Leads Gryphons against Lehman

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - A cold shooting night overall for the Gryphons led to an eventual 69-53 defeat to Lehman on Tuesday night. A field goal percentage of just 32.3% and 17% shooting from deep prevented the Gryphons from making up any ground on the Lightning, despite a slight rebound advantage. Sarah Lawrence now falls to 1-3 as they look ahead to a holiday-break trip to Christopher Newport University where they will play two games over the weekend.

By the Numbers
  • First year Eamon Kelly led the Gryphons in points with 13 and paced the team in rebounds as well with seven
  • Lucas Murray grabbed five boards and scored six points for Sarah Lawrence
  • John Kairouz came off the bench to score nine points for the Gryphons on 3-of-5 shooting from deep. He also grabbed five rebounds in the contest
  • Amos Grey scored ten points for Sarah Lawrence and dished out four assists as well in the losing effort

How it Happened

The game started off with a Lehman run that would keep the Gryphons playing from behind for the entire game. A three-pointer by the game's leading scorer Mo Idrissou would put the Lightning up 6-2 just two minutes into the game and would be the first of many momentum-draining shots that Lehman would hit throughout the night. Despite the overall cold shooting performance, Sarah Lawrence managed to stay competitive throughout the first half, making runs to keep within striking distance but unable to put the finishing touches on any of the runs to retake the lead. Shortly after entering the game with roughly six minutes remaining in the first half, Reuben Egan made a nice move to earn himself a good look from in the paint to bring the Gryphons within four points, but Lehman had an immediate answer with a layup just 13 seconds later to bring the lead back to six. A turnover by the Gryphons on the following possession led to another score and an eight point lead for the Lightning under a minute after Egan brought Sarah Lawrence within striking range. Lehman continued to pull away, bringing their halftime lead up to 12 points and forcing the Gryphons to play from behind for the remainder of the game.

The second half started with a 5-0 run by the Lightning which put the Gryphons in the unfortunate situation of playing with a 17-point deficit ahead of them. Two consecutive possessions with made baskets by Brady Burman and the aforementioned Kelly helped, but a rebuttal by Lehman's Juan Hernandez in-between scores kept any significant momentum from going the way of the Gryphons. Periodic scoring by both teams kept the margin steady throughout much of the second half, with neither team able to go on a run and maintaining a 12-15 point cushion throughout most of the period. With four-and-a-half minutes remaining the Gryphons put together a made jump shot by Grey and a three-pointer by Kelly to narrow the lead to 12 and gain some much-needed momentum, but after a Sarah Lawrence timeout it was the Lightning that found an advantage, converting on two consecutive possessions to bring the lead back to 16 points and keeping a safe cushion between the two teams. The remainder of the game saw that cushion remain, with both teams trading scores throughout the final buzzer which awarded Lehman with a 69-53 victory.
