Tamura's 21 Points Lead Gryphons in Win Over Farmingdale

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - A 21-point game by guard Kumi Tamura helped lead a triumphant comeback effort for the Sarah Lawrence College women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon as they rallied to defeat Farmingdale State College by a score of 70-62. This victory brought the Gryphons to 2-2 on the season (1-1 Skyline) and gave them their first conference win of the season.

By the Numbers
  • Tamura led the Gryphons with a team-high 21 points and added a steal
  • Jordyn Medina built off her career-high rebounding effort on Tuesday and grabbed a game-high 13 boards to go along with four points and a steal
  • Kendall Haymore earned another double-double, scoring 16 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in the winning effort
  • Demitra Loukopoulos scored 12 points for Sarah Lawrence while grabbing five rebounds and totaling 5 assists

How it Happened
The game did not start out in Sarah Lawrence's favor, with the Rams handedly winning the first quarter by a score of 23-9 and setting up for what seemed to be a long day for the Gryphons. As the second quarter started, the Gryphons rallied by getting to the free-throw line and letting Tamura get hot. With just under eight minutes remaining in the half, Kamura went on a 8-0 run by herself to bring Sarah Lawrence within six points of the lead with four minutes to play. Following a three-pointer by Farmingdale State's Jenna Pignataro, the Gryphons continued to fight their way back into the game, using a layup by Haymore and a made jump-shot by Medina to close the gap and tie the game with 36 seconds remaining. A lone free-throw made by the Rams with 12 seconds left would give them a one-point lead heading into halftime, but leaving a much different energy in the building as opposed to the end of the first quarter.

The third quarter was a period of back and forth play that saw Sarah Lawrence jump ahead early but were unable to pull away. A timely three-pointer from Colleen Coughlin as well as a successful 2-for-2 trip to the free-throw line for Haymore extended the lead to five points, where the margin would hover for the remainder of the quarter. A deep ball from Loukopoulos and layup by Haymore extended the lead to eight points briefly but again, the Rams were able to fight their way back and keep the lead at just four points with seconds left in the period. As time wound down, the Gryphons had the ball with the opportunity to end the period. A last-second three-pointer from Tamura connected and gave the Gryphons extra cushion heading into the last quarter but it was still anybody's game. As the fourth quarter began, Loukopoulos connected on another shot from deep to give Sarah Lawrence a double-digit lead that would last for roughly a minute before the Rams scored on a layup by the game's leading scorer Layla Mendoza. With just over two minutes remaining, another layup by Mendoza would bring the lead down to four points, but another answer from Haymore would keep the Gryphons in control and allow them to secure the victory by a score of 70-62.
