Sarah Lawrence's Loukopoulos Leads Team against Manhattanville

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - Manhattanville scored 16 points off turnovers to defeat the Sarah Lawrence women's basketball team on Tuesday night by a score of 67-48. The Gryphons now fall below .500 both overall and in Skyline games.

By the Numbers
  • Demitra Loukopoulos and Kendall Haymore tied for the team lead in points with 11 apiece
  • Loukopoulos added eight rebounds in the losing effort
  • Jordyn Medina continued her terrific year on the boards, grabbing a team-high 10 rebounds for Sarah Lawrence
  • Colleen Coughlin scored nine points for the Gryphons while forcing three turnovers as well
  • The Gryphons led the Valiants in field goal percentage, three-point shooting percentage, and free-throw percentage yet were out-shot by a 67-49 margin

How it Happened
The first quarter of play saw the Valiants jump out to an early 7-0 lead but then featured the Gryphons clawing their way back into the game to end the quarter down just one point. Five points by Haymore in the final 20 seconds of the quarter helped the Gryphons tie the contest before Manhattanville's Kristen Scrobola converted on a three-point-play with nine seconds remaining to reclaim a three-point lead. Two of Haymore's five late-in-the-quarter points would come on free throws with just three seconds remaining and bring the lead down to just one point after ten minutes of play. While the Gryphons were able to keep it close in the first quarter, the next ten minutes would prove to be a taller task. Another Haymore layup would give the Gryphons a lead to open the period and following a couple Manhattanville scores, a Kaila Dorch layup a few minutes later tied the game at 19 points apiece. While the game remained close, the Valiants began to pull away following Loukopoulos jumper with three minutes remaining in the half. Following the made shot that would put the score at 22-21 in favor of the visitors, the Gryphons would be held scoreless for the remainder of the period and Manhattanville would take an 8-0 run and a 30-21 lead into the intermission.

The third period was not what the Gryphons needed to get back into the game, with the Valiants scoring first off a turnover by Sarah Lawrence and extending the lead to double digits. Despite a three-pointer by Loukopoulos and a jumper by Medina to halt Manhattanville runs throughout the quarter, the Gryphons remained unable to bring the lead down to single-digits and after another Manhattanville run to end the quarter, the Valiants held a 19 point lead with just ten minutes remaining. An early 9-2 run for the Gryphons brought some life back to the team and reduced the lead to twelve points with six minutes remaining in the game. Two consecutive three-pointers by Manhattanville over the next minute reduced all progress made by Sarah Lawrence and with foul trouble for a few Gryphons, the team was unable to build any momentum to mount a comeback. As the final buzzer rang, the scoreboard showed a 67-48 victory for the Valiants.
