Gryphons Face-Off Against Undefeated Christopher Newport in Holiday Inn CNU Invitational

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. - The Sarah Lawrence men's basketball team fell to nationally ranked and undefeated Christopher Newport University Captains by a score of 87-52 on Saturday afternoon. The Gryphons will play against Eastern University at noon on Sunday November 27th in the 2022 Holiday Inn CNU Invitational consolation match. 

By the Numbers
  • First Year Chris Dougherty led the Gryphons in scoring with 13 points and recorded a team-high two blocks as well
  • Senior Chris Torres contributed seven points and two assists in the losing effort
  • The Gryphons were held to just 55 shots on the afternoon while the Captains put up 75 shots throughout the game
  • The Gryphons were able to force just five turnovers while coughing the ball up 17 times to the hosting Captains

How it Happened
The Captains jumped out to an early 11-2 lead and did not look back, keeping ahead of the Gryphons for the entirety of the contest. 11 first-half points for Ian Anderson led the attack for Christopher Newport and despite Dougherty's eight first-half points, the Gryphons were unable to keep up with the Captains and entered the halftime break down by a score of 38-26. The second half of play saw Christopher Newport pull away even more, using multiple scoring runs to extend the lead. As the final buzzer sounded, the Gryphons found themselves outrebounded 47-26 and outscored 87-52 against one of the top ranked teams in the country.

The Gryphons (1-4, Skyline 0-0) will take on Eastern University in the tournament's consolation match on Sunday November 27th at noon before returning home to host Centenary on Wednesday November 30th at 7:00 p.m.
