Gryphons Kick Off Rocky Mountain Thanksgiving Classic

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. - Despite 12 points and three steals from Colorado native Demitra Loukopoulos, the Sarah Lawrence College women's basketball team fell to Buena Vista University by a score of 75-55. This was the first of two games that the Gryphons will play on this road trip.

By The Numbers
  • Loukopoulos added three steals and four rebounds to her 12 points
  • Kumi Tamura led the team with 17 points while taking the ball away twice from Buena Vista players
  • Collen Coughlin scored six points and added six rebounds and five assists
  • Senior Jordyn Medina added six points and seven rebounds as she, like Loukopoulos, returned to her home state for this weekend's tournament

How it Happened
The Gryphons were plagued by turnovers in this one and Buena Vista made sure to capitalize on the Sarah Lawrence errors, scoring 25 points off turnovers. The Beavers started off the game strong, taking a 23-17 lead following the first 10 minutes of play. The Gryphons would go on a 12-0 run in the second quarter that would allow them to regain the lead by a score of 31-30 following a Loukopoulos three-pointer with 35 seconds remaining in the half. A three-point play by Buena Vista's Vanessa Hamlett with seven seconds left gave the Beavers the lead back heading into the half, but only by two points.

The Beavers opened the third quarter on a 13-2 run that would extend their lead to double-digits and keep the Gryphons playing from behind for the remainder of the contest. A connection from deep by Tamura with two minutes remaining in the third quarter would bring the lead back down to ten points, but the Beavers would answer and end the period with a 17-point cushion. The final quarter saw the teams trade baskets, as the margin would vary from 15-20 but never allow the Gryphons to gain enough momentum to make a run at the lead.

Up Next
The Gryphons will remain in Colorado Springs to take on Nebraska Wesleyan University on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. EST (1:00 p.m. local time) before returning to Skyline play on Tuesday night at Purchase.
