Gryphons Finish Trip to Christopher Newport against Eastern University

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Despite a strong second half, the Sarah Lawrence College men's basketball team fell to Eastern University by a score of 69-62. The Gryphons will now return home following their participation in this weekend's Holiday Inn Christopher Newport University Invitational.

By The Numbers
  • Justin DiFabio led the Gryphons in scoring with a game-high 18 points on 5-of-8 shooting from behind the three-point arc
  • First Year Chris Dougherty pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds and added nine points for Sarah Lawrence in the losing effort
  • Dougherty was named to the All-Tournament Team thanks to his outstanding performance in both games this weekend
  • Guard Amos Grey led the game in assists with eight and added seven rebounds, six points and a block
  • Eastern University totaled 41 shots from the free-throw line and despite converting just 70.17%, those attempts turned into 29 points.

How it Happened
The first half of play featured Eastern's Kaeshawn Ward and Sarah Lawrence's DiFabio leading the scorers, with 10 first-half points for Ward and 13 by DiFabio in the first 20 minutes of play. As halftime approached, a layup by Dougherty tied the game at 27 with five minutes remaining, putting the Gryphon in a position to even take the lead before halftime. Four straight free-throws by Eljay Morris gave Eastern the lead back and a fastbreak layup off a Jaron Fairweather steal with under a minute remaining would extend the lead to six points. Two more free-throws would bring the margin to eight points at halftime.

As the second half started, Eastern extended their lead with an 8-2 run that would bring the lead to 16 points. Five straight points by Olise Onyeka would bring the lead to eighteen points with just over 12 minutes remaining in the game, but the Gryphons were not finished. John Kairouz would kick-start a 9-3 Gryphons run that would close the scoring gap but also energize Sarah Lawrence for what would turn into a close contest once again. With just under two and a half minutes remaining, DiFabio would score three of his game-high 18 points and bring the lead back down to single digits as the Gryphons would trail 62-53 with time on the clock to work with. Two layups by Chris Torres on consecutive Sarah Lawrence possessions would help bring the lead to six points with 56 seconds remaining and keep the Gryphons within striking distance. On the ensuing Eastern University possession, DiFabio would block Morris's layup attempt but Zubair Lee would grab the rebound and score to halt the momentum. The two teams traded layups on the next two possessions but the lead was too much for Sarah Lawrence to overcome, even as a last-second three pointer by Torres was good off a pass from Grey.
