How it Happened
The Gryphons fell behind early in the game thanks to an early scoring spree from the Privateers, pulling ahead by double-digits within the first ten minutes and would eventually lead 23-7 following an Evan Block layup with 11:36 remaining in the half. The Gryphons would continue to battle and reduce the lead but a three-pointer by Theo Noble, the game's leading scorer, would re-extend the lead to 17 points with 3:24 left in the first half, stalling any momentum that the Gryphons had built up. A last-minute jumper from
Chris Torres gave Sarah Lawrence some momentum going into halftime, as they trailed by 14 points and looked to make a run in the second half.
That is just what they did, scoring six consecutive points to bring the lead down to eight points points on the back of a
Brady Burman three-pointer just a minute into the half. The Privateers would not back down, returning the lead to 14 points seven minutes later to lead 49-35 with 12:49 remaining in the game.
Justin DiFabio would connect from deep and Murray would follow that up with a layup to bring the lead back down to eight points with just under ten minutes remaining. A 7-0 run over the coming minutes would get the Gryphons within striking distance, trailing by one point with 6:13 remaining and forecast the down-to-the-wire game that would come. After trading baskets for the next few minutes, the game remained close with a one-point lead in favor of Maritime. A layup from Murray would give the Gryphons the lead with 57 seconds remaining and put the pressure on the Privateers to regain the lead. After a trip to the line with 31 seconds remaining, the Privateers did just that and regained the lead by a score of 62-61. It would once again be Murray to answer the call as he knocked down one-of-two free throws to tie the game with seven seconds left and send the game to overtime after making a nearly 20-point comeback.
In overtime it would be Noble, who scored seven of his 33 points in the extra period, to secure the victory for Maritime. Despite two connections from deep by Kelly, the Gryphons would be unable to keep up with the Privateers and as the overtime buzzer rang, the score sat at 77-73 in favor of the home team.
