Burman leads Gryphons in Battle against Maccabees

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence Gryphons battled against the Yeshiva Maccabees but ultimately fell short by a score of 77-70. The Maccabees are now 8-3 in Skyline play as the two-time reigning Skyline champions sit in second place in the conference's southern division.

By the Numbers
  • First-Year Brady Burman led the Gryphons with 16 points
  • Eamon Kelly scored 15 points for Sarah Lawrence while pulling down six rebounds and dishing out six assists
  • Senior Reuben Egan totaled ten points on 50% shooting from deep

How it Happened

The teams remained neck-and-neck throughout the first nine minutes of the game with neither team jumping out to a lead of greater than five points. A three-pointer from Egan would tie the game at 13 with eleven minutes remaining in the half and would continue the back-and-forth style of play that had summarized the first nine minutes. The two teams remained close throughout the next ten minutes as Kelly would connect from deep off a pass from Chris Dougherty for his first basket of the game to give the Gryphons a 25-24 lead with just over a minute remaining until halftime. The roles would swap on the next position as it was Kelly who found Dougherty for a shot from deep that would connect and give the Gryphons a four-point lead which would be carried into halftime.

The second half began with a 12-0 Yeshiva run that eliminated all of the momentum that the Gryphons had built up at the end of the first half of play. Ten combined points from Zevi Samet and Matan Zucker led the run for the Maccabees as they jumped out to a 37-28 lead just four minutes into the half. The Gryphons would answer back with a 10-3 run of their own but it would be answered by the Maccabees who would keep a small, yet steady lead throughout the next few minutes until a 6-0 scoring run by the Gryphons would bring the lead down to three points. Amos Grey scored on back-to-back possessions for Sarah Lawrence to close the gap to 56-53 with 5:41 left but it would be Samet who would answer with a three-pointer to give the Maccabees another two-possession lead. With a minute left, Yeshiva had maintained their lead and grown it to double-digits, but the Gryphons were not ready to give in. A four-point play by Kelly with fifty-three seconds remaining brought the Gryphons within six points, but the Maccabees would convert enough free-throw attempts to hold on to the lead through the final buzzer, winning by a score of 77-70.
