Haymore and Tamura lead Gryphons against USMMA

BRONXVILLE, N.Y.- The Sarah Lawrence women's basketball team fell to the 11-2 United States Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday afternoon by a score of 48-73. The Gryphons fell behind 39-24 at halftime and were unable to mount a comeback against the Eagles, who are 6-2 in Skyline play so far this season. Kendall Haymore scored 15 of Sarah Lawrence's 48 points and pulled down 12 rebounds, giving her double-doubles in her past five performances on the season.

By the Numbers
  • Haymore led the team in points and rebounds with 15 and 12 respectively
  • Sophomore Kumi Tamura scored 12 points for the Gryphons while picking up four assists
  • First Year Kaila Dorch pulled down seven rebounds to add to her eight points in the losing effort
How if Happened

The Gryphons got down late in the first quarter and the Eagles continued to apply pressure throughout the game, preventing any significant momentum from going the way of Sarah Lawrence. While the game started off with the two teams trading baskets, it would be the Eagles who would go on a run, scoring ten points in the final 2:08 of the first quarter to take a six-point lead into the first intermission. Throughout the second quarter, the Eagles continued to gradually build their lead, going up by double-digits multiple times while being answered by the Gryphons, but eventually it was too much for Sarah Lawrence as the Eagles would once again close the quarter out strong and take a 15-point lead into the halftime break.

The third quarter is when USMMA finally pulled away, holding Sarah Lawrence to just six points and scoring 22 to bring the lead to 31 points with 10 minutes to play. The last ten minutes of play saw the Gryphons narrow the USMMA lead down, but there was not nearly enough time for the Gryphons to mount a comeback. Despite a strong run including six of Haymore's 15 points, the Eagles remained in the lead as the final buzzer rang, claiming victory by a score of 73-48.
