Gryphons Travel to Face Top-Ranked Valiants

PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence women's volleyball team traveled to Purchase, New York to take on the Skyline-leading Valiants of Manhattanville College. The Gryphons fell in three sets as the Valiants improved to 8-0 in conference play.

Top Performers
  • Athena Kazos led all players with 11 kills and added two service aces
  • Mia Rector paced the Gryphons with 14 assists
  • Tabitha Hardin Zollo and Claire O'Rourke led the way in digs, with 11 for Hardin Zollo and seven for O'Rourke

How it Happened

The Gryphons jumped out to a 7-2 lead on the conference-leading Valiants before a five-point swing tied the game at seven points apiece. After two Manhattanville errors, one of Kazos's two service aces would give the Gryphons a three-point lead but six straight points by the hosts would erase any SLC momentum and before long it would by the Valiants with a commanding 18-12 lead. Kazos would answer with two kills but another scoring run by the Valiants brought the score to 23-14 and the hosts threatened to take the set. After a service error the Valiants would reach set point and after another Kazos kill the Valiants would strike to claim the set 25-14.

The second set would be a back-and-forth affair at the onset, with neither team able to gain an insurmountable lead. After a 6-6 tie, the Valiants took the next four points and ten of the next 11 points to jump out to a 16-7 lead. Despite kills by Rector, Kazos and Amelia Gedda would prolong the set but the hosts would take a two-set lead by the way of a 25-12 set victory.

The third set started out with five straight Manhattanville points, but the Gryphons would rally back to bring the set to 12-8 in favor of the Valiants. Two separate four-point runs by the Valiants would sandwich one SLC point as the hosts jumped out to a 20-9 lead and looked to be on the verge of taking the set and the match. Despite three late-set kills by Kazos, the Valiants closed out the set 25-14 and the match three to nothing.
