Ferguson Earns 1000th Dig; Gryphons Face-Off Against SJLI

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - Kaille Ferguson tallied her 1,000th dig as a Gryphon, as the Sarah Lawrence women's volleyball team fell to the Golden Eagles of St. Joseph's Long Island 3-1. The Gryphons fell in the first set, then claimed the second before falling in the final two.

Top Performers
  • Ferguson totaled a game-high 25 digs in the losing effort
  • Athena Kazos earned another double-double, with a team-high 15 kills to pair with 20 digs
  • Mia Rector led the way for the Gryphons once again in assists, this time with a total of 24

How it Happened

The two teams remained close for the majority of the first set, finding themselves tied at 4-4 before SJLI took two straight points. The Golden Eagles would hold the lead, but SLC would storm back to bring the score to 8-7 in favor of the visitors. The Golden Eagles took seven of the next nine points to take a 15-9 lead. After extending the lead to 18-11, the Gryphons mounted a ferocious comeback, using three service aces from Georgi Massey and kills by four different players to storm back and take 10 straight points and a three-point lead. St. Joseph's evened the score at 21 and after a kill by Kazos to regain the lead for SLC, the Golden Eagles took the final four points to claim the set 25-22.

The second set was close nearly all the way through, with the teams staying within three points until a 16-16 tie. The Golden Eagles would pull ahead 19-16 before Athena Kazos added a kill and service ace amid a four-point run to give SLC a 20-19 lead. The Golden Eagles would pull ahead 23-21 moments later but it would be the Gryphons to use another Kazos kill and a Mia Rector service ace to take the final four points of the set and a narrow 25-21 victory to even the match at one set apiece.

The third set started similarly to the first two, with SJLI taking a narrow 6-5 lead early on, but a nine-point run by the Golden Eagles took control of the set 15-5 and they would continue to hold on through the remainder of the set. Carolyn Kelly and Raegan Lacombe earned kills in the final minutes of the set, but an SLC attack error would give the Golden Eagles a 25-14 set victory and a 2-1 lead in the match.

The fourth set was very similar to the third, with a close start before a nine-point swing in favor of the visiting Golden Eagles to give them an 18-5 lead. Kazos and Massey would combine for five more kills but it would not be enough as St. Joseph's would close the match out with two straight kills, taking the final set 25-13.
