How it Happened

The Gryphons started the first set off 8-4, but the hosting Bears stormed back to bring the score to 12-11 and eventually tie the set at 18 points apiece. After three points by the Gryphons, including a Skyler Kawecki-Muonio service ace, the Bears would take two points to force a 21-20 score. The Gryphons would rally to take the final four points, with back-to-back service aces securing a 25-20 first-set victory for the visitors.

SLC jumped ahead early in the second set as well, finding themselves a 6-3 advantage, but the Bears stormed back to take a 7-6 lead. The two teams remained neck-and-neck for the majority of the set, with the Gryphons eventually finding themselves with a 19-18 lead late in the set. Two consecutive Kazos kills, a service ace by Rector and a kill by Kawecki-Muonio would give the Gryphons a 23-18 lead that would turn into a set victory a few rallies later via another Massey kill.

The third set saw the Bears get out to a 6-2 lead on the back of two SLC errors. The Gryphons then rallied for seven straight points, including two of Ferguson's five service aces. After trading points back-and-forth, the Gryphons went on a five-point run to take a 17-9 lead. After the Bears capitalized with a Mireia Alba kill, the Gryphons took the next three points to get to 20, five points away from a match victory. Brooklyn would get to 14 points, but SLC would take four of the last five points of the match and once again it would be Georgi Massey to close out the match.
